Learn a Lot in a Few Minutes: Great Engineering Videos

08/30/2020 8:18 AM

Sometimes I run across a video or article quite pertinent to what's enjoyed here, but lack a way to toss it into the forum without being out of context?

Here's the place where such information can now land.

Please feel free to add your own anecdote and interesting information.

Much obliged

The video below gave me so many oohs, ahhs and ah-ha's that I felt remiss keeping it to myself.

I thought that "being out of context" was what I was here for?

Somewhat related: A few years back I went to a trade show where there was a friction bit for drilling holes. In the trade show booth they drilled 1/4" holes in 1/8" thick mild steel in about 10 seconds. Not only did the holes not need to be deburred but there was a smooth and level ring melted into the top surface to provide a good seat for a washer. The far side of the hole was irregular with the melt-out but if you were installing hardware that went all the way through square tube it was a nice system.

Ahhh yes.. the "flow drill"

Uncle Ave explains it here.

Any why? One reason is to make a hole that can be tapped into thin material.

Great schtuff!

I'd like to see where that engine ends up?!

I watch street outlaws with my son and they beat the h*** out of every component in an attempt to get a few seconds of racing done now and then.

..just insane numbers!!

Here's another interesting video. He is really harnessing the inanimate powers of nature for the betterment of mankind.

I wonder how many square feet of greenhouse it would take to supply a city of a million population? And, how many square feet of normal row cropping to achieve the same amount. For simplicity, everything would be vegetarian. Use the same latitude he's on.

If you notice he said he could see how could replace all the "table citrus" meaning pretty fruits with a story selling at a farmers market @ $3.50 a pound. ... I didn't he say that?

I don't like paying $3.50 a pound a lot of things. certainly not produce.

... That said.. one time I looked up supermarket tomatoes labeled as grown in Arizona.

When I looked up the company on Google Earth to check out their greenhouse or growing arrangement? I was gob smacked. -odd term- who comes up with them?

Not strictly engineering, but if you're interested in physics, you might like the PBS Space Time series.

Followed one of the other videos to this:-

https://youtu.be/1VPfZ_XzisU

About agular momentum of bodies spinning in space flipping periodically.

This all seems very counter-intuitive to me because in several of the cases the angular momentum appears to almost completely reverse with no external forces acting on the body.

I agree, that's a pretty amazing video. I think if I were an astronaut, I would be wasting a lot of time playing with it...

If you look closely, the wingnut is always rotating in the same direction with respect to the space capsule cabin but alternates the direction of spin with respect to the wingnut. The angular momentum doesn't change with respect to the universe.

Let us hope that the mass of our planet never gets redistributed so that it is rotating about the moment of inertia's intermediate axis. It might be a wild ride and would definitely have an interesting effect on climate.

Say the part were not missing,

What would be the old world method of heating a crucible hot enough to "smelt?" aluminum?

Aside from the mother of all bellows? What else?

Does "borax" raise the heat?
