Molten Bath Level Detector

11/07/2007 1:10 AM

Guys,

I have a bath of molten metal alloy which temperature is kept at 600oC. I'd like to control the level of molten metal in this bath and make a closed loop control.

what type can you suggest me ?

Thank for the help.

Cheers,

An overflow weir works just fine.

I believe that you can do this by mouting Ultrasonic Distance ranging Sensors on top of the mouten bath.

The environment temperature from 1 meter distance above the bath is about 82oC.

The installation space is very limited, can not higher than this height.

What is the maximum ambient temperature for this Ultrasonic type, what I know is 70oC?

cheers.

Is it possible to reflect an ultrasonic beam to a distance farther from the molten metal? Also, most electronic devices can withstand temperatures of 100oC or more.

One might assume the sensor to be the issue. Many would not work due to temperatures. There are laser sensors designed for industrial level sensing, including that of molten metal.

Radar level gauge works well and have to cool electronics seperatly. Krone or Saab level gauges (google it)

You could use a material that has a higher melting point, but less dense, like some of the ceramic's available, use this as a "Float" on a chain, as the level drops, the chain pulls on a switch, or could be connected to a clock-work mechanism to lower ingots into the bath to refresh the required level.

This is the principle that was used on the "Intertype" machines in the printing industry for making lines of "type".. or extrusion machines for "rules"

For a cheap solution why don't you just use thermocouples? The transition from 600 when touching the melt to ambient out of the melt (and vice versa) would be fairly rapid even with a relatively high ambient.

Abu:

You might consider a simple probe with exposed metal conductors on the end. Immersing the conductors in the liquid should produce an easily measurable change in resistance between the sensor tips. With a little ingenuity, the level could be varied by changing the probe height.

Depending on your installation, the weight of the vessel could be simply tracked.
