Three interesting counterintuitive physics problems. Enjoy...

Nice video. I particularly liked the inserted cut where he addresses a self perceived flaw in the presented "proof" of the analysis.

I wonder what other subtle attributes the chain and ring flip needs to be met for this to happen? The length of the chain certainly has to be just right. What about the unit link mass and length versus the ring mass and diameter?

A visual is usually a lot more convincing than numbers, but there is the argument that the food coloring affects the density.

It looks like there is a very slight density gradient of water with temperature, but ice cubes melt slowly, so the convection doesn't have to be too energetic.

Hardly any amount of salt added brings the density up higher than water at any temperature, blocking any convection in the salt water.

I have an extra key ring, and when I find a chain, I will try out the ring and chain trick.

That all depends on the odd ball reviewing the presented data. This odd ball prefers numbers to images.

This odd ball deduces the top table refers to the density of pure distilled liquid water at multiple temperatures, while the lower table refers to the changes in liquid density at the singular temperature of 0°C for water at various salinity but all in a liquid state.

Still the video splice with different colored dyed ice in differing saltiness does quickly show an initial whole glass convection of the salt free solution as opposed to the slight brine. Is this difference due to the color choice, dye concentration uniformity in each cube or a "one off" editing selection? There aren't many frames that show this effect. This is why any video snip can never be considered as absolute proof of nearly anything. Nonetheless, addressing a perceived flaw should be saluted regardless of how incomplete one finds the address.

As for the ring and chain trick, since a 90° rotation must happen close enough to the end of the drop so a greater than the ring diameter chain tip flips up though the ring I am certain multiple hidden parameters must be met. This is a classic "magic trick" combination that many stage magicians using this trick may not understand.

This oddball prefers to see the numbers in graphic format. I can look at graphs, and usually get the gist of them im a matter of seconds, while it takes at least minutes of study to grasp the meaning of a table of numbers.

I agree that some titles would have been very helpful in Rixter's tables, and I do agree with your deductions as to their meanings.

Here's that same data in graphic format, with both graphs having the same vertical density scale:

Here, it should be immediately obvious that changes is salt concentration affect the density vastly more than changes in temperature, assuming you can read the fine print!

As always, CR4 urgently needs a higher resolution method of showing graphic images.

Reminds me of the old flip a piece of rope into a knot trick that occupied a few weeks of my childhood...where you flip a loop in the rope that hits near the end of the rope hanging, and the end is propelled up into the loop forming a simple knot....not so much a magic trick as a learned skill...

This is a really sloppy demonstration...

The trick is make it look as effortless as possible....
