Million Mile Battery

09/14/2020 3:01 PM

I read about a million mile battery that is a reality and Musk has something to do with it. Is this some kind of April fool joke?

It's not just China.

BU-1003a: Battery Aging in an Electric Vehicle (EV)

The new and improved tech is likely connected to an April 2019 announcement by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who promised a “1 million-mile battery pack” for Tesla’s vehicles in 2020 and beyond.

The battery pack can outlive the car maybe...but it still needs to be charged all the time and is 10% more expensive, in an electric car that is a significant amount....good only for taxi's and long haul truckers imo...

You might be confusing this with the nuclear diamond battery....that's the one that supposedly never needs charging....although the charge is really quite minuscule...

I would like to see a much larger nuclear heat source that could be used to expand refrigerant and drive an expander turbine, a closed system that ran continuously....

If they can perfect a cheap, lightweight effective shielding material, nuclear spent fuel could be used for charging batteries in ev's...

I'm not sure the lifetime of the batteries is the biggest problem. If electrics completely replace the internal combustion engine, can the electric grid handle it?

The calculation should be straightforward. How many cars are on the road, average and peak summer vacation time, and what is the average power consumption per car? I'm thinking of California with their grid browning out under the load of their air conditioners.

It seems like it would, but of course, they have a plan....

..."The average electric vehicle requires 30 kilowatt-hours to travel 100 miles — the same amount of electricity an average American home uses each day to run appliances, computers, lights and heating and air conditioning."..

...."A November report sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy found that there has been almost no increase in electricity demand nationwide over the past 10 years, while capacity has grown an average of 12 gigawatts per year (1 GW can power more than half a million homes). That means energy production could climb at a similar rate and still meet even the most aggressive increase in electric vehicles, with proper planning."...

...."Seattle City Light and others are looking at various ways to promote charging during ideal times. One method is time-of-day rates. For the Seattle chargers unveiled last month, users will pay 31 cents per kWh during peak daytime hours and 17 cents during off-peak hours. The utility will monitor use at its charging stations to see how effective the rates are at shifting charging to more favorable times. "...

So there will probably be some sort of incentive programs to charge during 'off peak' hours if needed...

"The average electric vehicle requires 30 kilowatt-hours to travel 100 miles " One unexpected bonus of electric cars is that we learn to use the same units. American cars have a low mileage per one of those funny US gallons, while the rest of the world gets far more mileage out of our noble Imperial gallons.

But would you believe it? Your kilowatt-hours are the same a ours!

Yes, but you seem to get more kilometers than we do miles per kwh. This game of one-up-manship has gone on long enough. I say we convert to barrels; it would probably only take 1/10th of a barrel to fill up the entire tank.

Here in Isla del Encanto,we measure distance in KM, speed in MPH. buy fuel in L, and pay for it in USD. Believe it or not, some folks want P.R. to become a state!!

Gasoline consumption USA = 13 billion kwh/day.

Diesel consumption USA = 4.68 billion kwh/day.

Yes, we'd be in a pickle.

Electric vehicle batteries are built to last 100,000 to 200,000 miles. Musk is saying he has a battery that can last 5-10x that.

It's the life of the battery, not how many miles per charge.

Hey Ron,

Battery Day will be interesting that's for sure.

The big problem is degradation from repeated charge/discharge cycles.
Who knew electrons could wear out?

Its some sort of alchemy that escapes me. This stuff is a long way from the good old days....

Re: Million Mile Battery

heres the latest from Tesla.

The 4680 Battery Cell

Compared with Tesla's current 2170 battery cell, the company's just-revealed 4680 cell (the "46" refers to its 46mm diameter, and the "80" refers to its 80mm length) is both much larger and lacks battery tabs. The company asserts it will be 14% cheaper to make (on a cost per KWh basis) than the 2170 at the cell form factor level, while also boosting vehicle range by 16%.

Baglino said Tesla has begun ramping production of the 4680 at a pilot line at Tesla's Fremont, CA plant. However, Musk said it will probably be about a year before the pilot plant's annual capacity hits 10GWh, while adding that (when they arrive) fully-fledged production plants will have a capacity of around 200 GWh.
