What is your goal? They work best as a coating on the paint, so spread on top while paint is still wet...Like road markings and signs

A lot of material here....

i was thinking of custom auto industry like tail lights and blinker under a top coat of paint so that it would shine through when in use but not be visible when not in use or a company logo or sign in truck doors. so many uses

Basically, microspheres reflect a beam of light back toward its source. They are mainly used in sign paint to reflect headlights back toward the driver.

I don't see how you could use them to hide tail lights or turn signals, but you could make an advertising sign that is visible at night when illuminated by headlights.

I do recall the "magic" speed limit signs that change from '70' in the daytime to '65' at night. The high brightness retroreflected light at night overpowers the normal "daytime" coloration of the signs.

You could also go another route with paint that actually lights up with an electric charge called LumiLor....

Yes they have 8 listed, but some seem to have rather subtle differences....the brightest seems to be the one demonstrated in the video above...What they need is color change by voltage control, and brighter light...

I wonder how hard it would be to make a simple animation, like a cobra rising up on the side of the car...?

Since tires rotate, why not line the edges with LED's and create a display when the car is in motion?Of course the display will flicker with varying speed, but on an interstate, where speeds are relativity constant, anything could be displayed with good pretty resolution;messages, video, etc.

In a subway, using polarized windows, the display could be put on the walls and would appear to be moving to the passengers.

Yeah, or you could cover the entire car with 41k LED's....

A little too flashy for me haha...

Re: Electric paint

Why buy it when you can make it?

See link below.

It is very similar to my home made India Ink.

I think you could also draw a fractal antenna on your wall(s),and paint over it with Kilz, and then regular paint...Walla! an invisible antenna!

Or how about on a window facing the right direction,or multiple windows with a painted selector switch ?

Jus' thinkin'.

If you live in an area where coal is plentiful,Anthracite Coal is around 98% carbon, you could crush it or make coke from it by burning it in the absence of oxygen, like making charcoal. Then you will have a more purified form of carbon.

Painting a receiving antenna on an insulating wall is one thing, but electroluminescent paint has to be energized with 120 vac.

I know they are different, but the title of the thread was Electric Paint,so I included conductive paint in my replies.

Perhaps I should have marked my replies as off topic.

Naw, it's not off-topic. I was just thinking about how it might be tricky painting these layers and getting uniform thickness with no gaps for 120 vac short circuits.

I know my own painting ability, and I would be reluctant to attempt it myself, given what this stuff costs and possible damage to the automobile.

There are some custom painters at motorcycle shows that put on an application to light up a gas tank or fender from inside the paint. I am not sure of the technique, though I believe I have a grasp of it. It is essentially turning a clearcoat layer of paint into fiber optic layer. There is a name for it but it eludes me as it has been awhile since I have been to a bike show. It is impressive looking, especially when in a dark room. Edit note: Look up GATOR glass custom paint, no endorsement, but you can see what I mean on their website.

Re: Electric Paint

I have made conductive paints throughout the years (both electrically and thermally), yes the usual metals (and of course carbon) work well, just need the correct loading. There is a line of conductive polymers that i have never tried but look quite promising (from what i recall). I have also made high temperature (>800C) electrically conductive coatings using Perovskite structures with rare earths. although not very conductive when compared to precious metals, they work as long as the coating is thin enough for the current.

I believe the future of conductive paints will be for in-door lighting of a wall or ceiling, adding a phosphorescent powder with will enhance the ambiance properties

Way back in the ancient times before the 'Net,I made some conductive ink to create an anti static coating on my workbench.

I used India Ink,and added enough layers to give a resistive coating to the the traces on my desk.

Later,I discovered if you take soot and mix it with ammonia and alcohol, you will have a fairly comparable substitute.

I scraped soot from the exhaust pipe of my diesel tractor,it is finer than charcoal ash.

The ingredients in the MSDS sound a lot like my homemade India ink, which I got from an old Popular Electronics magazine.

If making it today,I would probably use the carbon toner powder from a discarded copier.Dirt cheap at yard sales.I might add a touch of diluted pine resin to the alcohol.

It would be unwise to share too much on here lest others should set up competing <...business opportunities...>.

As far as others' contributions are concerned, if it has value to a <...business...>, then what incentive is there for those individuals to contribute?

With self-assimilating compounds and photon emitting paint,I am waiting for the time when you can buy an electronic display in a can,and roll it onto a wall.
