If the generator is a 4 lead alternator, use of two "L" and a neutral will result in a 1/3 power reduction, however if 12 leads are available, or you are savey enough to get into the windings and pull out the coil connections, two of the phases can be connected in "ZIG-ZAG" configuration and the alternator will be able to deliver full rated power.
Am working with a lister-petter generator and I would like to convert from 11kva 3-phase to ~11kva single phase. I'll check whether i have the drawings and then get back to you.
Newage International of Stamford UK provides circuit diagrams on how to convert their 3 phase to single phase generators. One of the options illustrated is the Zig-zag mentioned in the other post.
I had to convert a genset from 120/220 split phase to single phase 120V only, for one of my design jobs.
Newage provides the generator head for a multitude of generators sold under various brand names.
