Soft-Touch on Plastic Material

11/17/2020 2:22 PM

Hello to all,

I am working on a project and I want to attach soft-touch feeling on particular product. The core will be plastic material PA6 and on top applied soft touch feeling.

I am interested by your experience regarding soft-touch(mechanical and chemical properties), durability, feeling... All the properties off soft touch material.

If you have any link to share, I will be greatfull.

Thanks for the feedback

Pretty vague, there is also texture and durability, water resiliency, amount of give, smooth surface or other, but generally speaking a fabric or other material over foam rubber, or a latex rubber, or combination of some sort...depends on the amount of contact and forces involved, as well as the surfaces that are going to be contacted and the environment of operation and desired longevity of service....

All the rubber on the soft touch surfaces of my VW are peeling. It's ugly splotchy looking surfaces. I'm not a fan due to longevity issues. I'm not sure who ever thought this was good idea. (Wait a minute, it was probably the marketing department. There's the problem.)

Thanks! I wish they hadn't put that stuff on there in the first place. A textured, matte finish on the plastic stuff would have been just fine. It's all over the dash, door cards, and so on. I'll have to take a look at this link when I get home. Company net nannies block these kinds of sites.

it sounds more like an adhesive issue and not a material one. an automobile interior is one of the harshest environments for polymer materials. Temperature extremes and UV exposure.

soft materials lose plasticizers which are usually shorter chained polymers. In the heat and UV exposure these softeners outgas and leave the material brittle. Toss in thermal expansion from heating and cooling, as well as mechanical bending and stretching and you get cracks.

but it sounds like you are experiencing a delamination issue?

It would be helpful to the forum if a list of tried-and-rejected solutions were available to cut out the guesswork.

  • Double-sided adhesive tape has to be among the options.

Ok.

I won't to put soft touch on plastic key. Plastic has wave shape and in dimension is app. 30x20mm.

Due to the environment and purpose, would this soft touch last or it would be quickly removed and in long term will have worst results?

Soft touch might be ok if it is thick enough to actually have some structural strength. What VW put on their soft-touch surfaces might only be about 10 mils thick. Barely 'plated' on.

The forum could have done with knowing that at the outset.

I think PVD or CVD coating the key with a hard metal would provide the longest lasting textured finish...any textured finish, such as soft touch, provides friction on handling and eventually wears off...by making the texture finish as hard or harder than the key itself, the texture should last the lifetime of the key....
