How can I calculate required pressure for compression moulding of graphite moulded ring?

You have a material that you want to make into a thing, you must define the characteristics you wish to achieve, then determine the method to achieve it....So you want to make a ring, what type of ring? How hard should it be, flexibility?, environment, design life, all must be considered...So for instance typically you would use a binder, possibly phenolic resin...100 kg cm-2

This is for making moulded ring of density 1.6 gm/cc from graphite foil having 0.7 gm/cc. The process is compression moulding, graphite corrugated tape are vertically winded in a die/mould without any binder.

I know load will vary depending on the size, my question is how to calculate required moulding pressure.

https://www.fluidsealing.com/publication-downloads/FSA%20Gasket%20Handbook%20-%20June%202017.pdf

..."Flexible graphite tape can be die molded or compressed on site to form endless labyrinth rings (see die-formed ring illustration on page17). The final density of the die molded or compressed graphite varies between 1.2 g/cm3 (75 lb/ft3 ) and 1.8 g/cm3 (113 lb/ft3 ). Graphite tape packings have a low coefficient of friction, a pH range of 0-14, and are noted for their excellent thermal properties, enabling them to be used in applications to 2500°C (4532°F) in non-oxidizing atmospheres. Due to their temperature resistance and density, they make ideal steam valve packings. The tape has almost universal chemical inertness and is naturally lubricious, compactable, and resilient. However, the material is fragile and susceptible to wear in abrasive condition or media."....

Carbon Graphite seal rings

I'd say about 20 tons should do it....

I think load should vary depending on size. Size may vary from 10 mm OD to 800 mm OD, so it cannot be the same.

I was looking for some basis to calculate required pressure

Thanks! It describes pressure seal gasket with end caps,

I am actually working to establish a basis to calculate required moulding pressure for making such ring/gasket

"Graphite foil is a basic material designed for most seals. The high purity foil GFC99 has excellent mechanical characteristic, is easy to form and it has a high resistance of montage pressure up to 250 N/mm²."

SolarEagle isn’t going to come up with the answer, because there isn’t one, Mildred.

You’d be better describing what steps you’ve taken in trials so far.

See 8 below.

Don't over think this! If you are molding different sized rings in the same press, you'll want a BIG one.

Once the mold closes, and the excess material is vented, the pressure on the mold is whatever it took to close the press. The pressure inside the mold becomes unimportant.

CLAMPING PRESSURE is the key! Get enough press to close your largest tool on the machine.

This is a trial and error process, limited only by the clamping force of the machine.

Talk to mold suppliers to help you. Your material supplier should be happy to advise you.

KISS!

DO NOT go it alone.

One of the ways is to carry out pilot-scale trials.
