What about them, specifically?

Do you ever partake in "Refrigeration Engineer.com" in the U.K.

Most chillers require a minimum flow through the evaporator. Therefore, variable flow systems are designed around a primary and a secondary pumping system. The secondary system may consist of one variable pump or a combination of pumps and only one being a variable pump. Also depending on the overall tonnage, there may be more than one chiller. There is also a control sequence of operation that must be developed. This is generally done through the use of a computer.

Things to avoid is the short cycling of the chillers and pumps.

Economizers are also used in these types of systems as outside air temp is often usable as the cooling requirements. All controlled by computer using sensors.

For a simple explanation, with links to other sources: (1) Go to www.mcquay.com, (2) Select "Americas" (3) Select "Literature" (4) Select "Design Tools" (5) Select "Systems" (6) Select "Variable Flow Chiller Plants." This website has two or three other documents you might find useful.

The Trane web site also has "White Papers" on Variable Flow Chilled Water Systems. You may also want to look into wet economizer cycles. I design Central Plants for the Large Casinos in Vegas. We have tried just about every Chiller arrangement out there.
