UK Customs

01/01/2021 6:30 PM

Am I to understand correctly starting Jan 1 of 2021 anyone selling something to anyone in the UK, they will have to make an account and a bunch of other stuff and the seller be the one to collect the Duty taxes etc. And send it to the UK government? as in this article?

Yes? No?

The KrisDelTM franchise chap selling watches on Oxford Street, London, isn't too fussed. We are looking into the legality of this, but it's very much up to the Franchisee and his dodgy overcoat.

That kind of sucks doesn't it?

I also heard someplace that the same will happen to the rest of the EU in July or so?

Where can someone go to learn what the rules or changes like this are for any country?

Say like The Netherlands?

True, but when I read the posting I thought What!? Really? I guess no small places will be selling to the UK anymore.

With so much legislation, and complicating factors outside of 'Brexit', it's almost impossible to predict how things will develop. In 1972 there was a somewhat similar confusion about the effects of joining the then EC. It will be chaotic for some time, but my general impression is that some form of trading 'normality' will come to be. I cannot evidence that because it's a gut feeling from a mass of info. When two parties wish to trade, it can happen. Start of the year does not preclude further arrangements between the UK and other countries. Covid has very much muddied the waters, but my guesstimate is that we can all revist this thread in 6 months and discuss what is. To use a bad choice of words, it's a done deal. Sort of.

I'm sure everything will sort itself out after a while, it takes a while to find all the loopholes, exceptions and workarounds...

. . . or using some sort of crypto-currency. Maybe the seller will have to buy stamps to put on the products . . . .
