4 Cylinder Diesel Engine Turbocharged-Blow by

Could anyone tell me the precautions to take to decrease the blowby in the 4 Cylinder Diesel Engine Turbocharged?

I dealt with this same problem my 6 Cy. engine. Blow by is the result of gases that bypass the rings of the piston. The tighter the rings fit, the less blow by.

I made up a "oils scrubber" and fitted it to my engine. It re burned the blow by gases and removed the oil mist and returned the oil back into the engine.

Renewing the piston rings would certainly help. It may be that the cylinder liners would need renewal too.

I had already replaced the pistons rings but there was no change in the blowby value, There is a problem of leakage of exhaust gases thru turbocharger oil outlet to the engine oil sump. Whats the solution.

It sounds like you neeed to renew the seals in your turbo. Are you are getting oil residue in your intake between the turbo and the head? That was the telltale sign for me, but I believe my oil pressure was too high, so the oil leaked into the intake instead of the exhaust gas leaking into the oil. How much boost are you running? I was only running between 8 and 10 PSI, but it was a 4 cyl gas engine. Diesels are naturally capable of higher boost levels.

did the cylinder walls look OK? scored/scratches/etc. did you run a hone down them when you replaced the rings?

HMMm? Can you disconnect the return pipe from the turbo and run the engine? Extend the return pipe to a 2 gal bucket (clean, for return to engine) Takes two people to check where blow-by is coming from. Be ready to stop engine depending on oil in bucket!!

I have done the same experimentation there is reduction in blow thats why I asked about the precautions to reduce the blowby .

even though there weren't any marks, when an engine is broken in, it has a fresh hone and the rings seat in. If the rings are changed it needs a fresh hone for them to seat on. As a second thought, did you check the bore diameter. Maybe it came oversize or someone has rebuilt it before. Putting standard size rings in an overbore would make it worse. Good luck with it.

I only changed the second ring and got all the dimensions checked for the piston, bore & rings .

The problem of the blowby is with the turbo charger.

If you have changed the piston rings and checked cylinder linings , check the oil pressure , oil also acts as sealant during running , check the grade , if it is not concerned with blow by , than check pistons for scratches , cracks where rings seat
