Help Me Identify IC

01/27/2021 12:05 PM

I have a fan control board from a Goodman heat pump. All components test good, but there is one 8 pin chip that has identification removed or obscured.

Is there any way to identify this chip,or to get a schematic for this board?

The board number id is: PCBFM103S.

Thanks in advance for all help on this.

It looks like you can get a whole new board for $15 from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/Goodman-PCBFM103S-Blower-Control-Board/dp/B00PCHFMHW

My wild arse guess is the IC is maybe a 555 timer.

You might look at the back of the board and see how it correlates with a 555 timer pinout. The output pin 3 probably goes to a relay, ground is pin 1, voltage pin 8.

Yup I know they are cheap, but I am bored so I though I would fix it.It may be a 555,but I am thinking a 1005270A.Pin 3 on this IC is Not Connected.

Now trying to find a pin out or PDF application note.

Thanks for the feedback.

The IC could be proprietary. It keeps the competition from reverse engineering and producing cheap copies, I presume.

Just a thought since you are bored and have the time to spare..hope you don't mind.

With a small board like yours, I normally would redraw the schematic diagram together with the unknown IC as a blanked square with just the numbered pins..

From the schematic drawing you may be able to easily deduce the kind or type of I.C. that's been used..

I believe if it really was a proprietary designed component, there will be no need to remove any identifying marks..

Have you checked the fuse link? Might be a weak run capacitor for the blower motor...

This is a spare board that I removed. The new one works fine.I decided to repair this since I have the time to do it.

All components on the board test good, but I can't find info on the chip.

Rixter is probably right. It may be proprietary to prevent copy cat or to prevent repair.

It is cheaper to replace than repair,if you have to send it out for repair, but I do most board repairs myself, with the exception of surface mount components.

I do not have the equipment for de-soldering or the patience and steady hands to do it anymore.

Through-the-board components are becoming extinct and will soon be totally obsolete ,like us guys that repair them.

Haha you know that's right! between my eyes getting worse and the components getting smaller I feel like King Kong trying to play checkers...

I guess it must have been my work experience that made me so nervous.

As a young man I used to work at a sewing machine factory.

My job was to thread the needles in the machines as they came down the line, with the machines running as I threaded them.

Now,it is a hard habit to break.,but it has it's advantages and disadvantages.

I try to be a positive person.

I don't have to stir my coffee anymore, but I have to be very careful opening my beer.

The battery died on my electric razor, and I didn't even notice.

I don't need a hand buzzer to pull a gag on people.

I don't need an ultrasonic tooth brush.

I can make butter without a churn.

But I just can't deal with the surface mount chips anymore.

I replaced a watch SMIC once, but that was many years ago.

You ever notice when trying to put something small in a small hole, that it will go everywhere EXCEPT the hole?

My solution is to aim for the side of the hole instead of the center..; Then there is about a 51/49 chance then of it going in.(I suggest talking this over with your wife first;....When she asks you to thread a needle...get your mind out of the gutter).

Someone once said that getting old is not for sissies.

Hi SE of course you could always do what I now do and use a USB microscope to suss out the joints and SMD chips. I bought the SMD solder station years ago when I repaired VCOs and Front ends on radios but times have moved on and now it usually gets used as a hot air gun after soldering.

I wonder if an opto coupler might fit the circuit, considering it looks like you are interfacing with high voltage...

This happens to be MCT9001 Fairchild, one other single channel optocoupler I saw needs pin 3, you were able to test the transistor ok in the circuit..?

Unlikely, look at SE's post #3: pins 4 and 8 are shorted with a power rail (which is unusual for many 8 pin devices).

I went over the back side of the board with a 10X magnifying glass, and found a bad solder joint on the output pin of the relay.

It could not be seen with the naked eye,it was under the conformal coating. The problem was intermittent,so I think this was it.

Probably heating up under load, the closing when cooled. The kind of problem that will drive you knutz.

I will re-solder all of the pins on the bottom side just for good measure, then test it when the weather clears.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback!

Possibly an Op Amp.
