Why Don't "Selfie" Cameras Correct the Mirror Image When They Save the Picture?

I hadn't noticed that the selfie camera on phones actually works like a mirror rather than a normal camera. That seems reasonable because it's probably easier to frame the shot, but, why doesn't it correct the image when it saves it?

I think more people would prefer the WYSIWYG, what you see is what you get. People are used to seeing themselves in a mirror and would be dissatisfied with the corrected image.

Some cameras have the option of turning that off.

Actually, I just tested my Samsung S9+ phone and the stored selfie picture is corrected, so text in the picture reads the right way.

Thanks all.

I eventually found the switch button on my Samsung Note under

Camera ¬ Settings ¬ Save options

I just had eye surgery, and I was amused that they drew a big arrow over the duff eye, so I thought I'd take a picture.

When I looked at the picture I thought "Oh shoot, they're going to do the wrong eye." 'til I realised that the image was mirrored.

that’s great... and on the same lines, thats why X-Rays are labeled and well as putting a marker on it when the X-Ray is taken...

I don't have a smartphone, so I don't have to worry about it!

So, what does Zoom do? The picture of me that I see on my screen is what I would see in a mirror. But I think the others are corrected--I'll have to pay more attention!
