A friend of mine combined a computer CD drive with an amplifier. It can be done.

I think a car CD is however better protected against shocks and movement. You have to check it out.

www.carpc.com

They have cd-rom drives made for use in cars. I don't know about using it without a pc though.

....why not...it requires dual power supply...you need a connector from any computer store than a voltage divider for +12V / +5V and GND with good regulation and an amplifier to punch your speakers , most PC CD players have audio output female connector at front end for head sets , you can directly connect to amplifier I/P . If you know pin configuration of input jack for audio I/P jack connector to M/B even that can work. You will need space to adjust all these as space available in car deck will take only your CD player .Also see for shocks and vibrations that can affect there performance while on move

I have a deck that plays mp3 encoded CD's, 10hrs/disc Or an Ipod.

Kotian is probably trying to do it on the cheap, should be possible gonna need a sound card & be able to locate where the 250mv signal(s) should be applied to the cassette or there is an adapter cassette w/a wire you can purchase

You can get a car CD deck for less then $100. By the time you got the power supply, wire, custom mount, cassette adaptor, you'll be pretty close. Also you'll need a CD-ROM with play, stop and skip button in front. Or else it won't even play the CD.

BTW the CD-ROM won't play MP3 CD without a computer if that's what you're trying to do.

It is very possible, but it does not make for a cheap solution, if that is what you want.

I have replaced the drive inside of a car cd player with a DVD rom slot load mech and routed the signal out to a car pc. Touch screen control makes operation simple after that. One warning, mech and computer interface must be close proximity due to timing issues on IDE cable (haven't played with SATA yet).

BTW for reference this was accomplished for a famous ball player (Tracy Mc Grady) in 2001, but not used in the final application due to the size of the computer available at the time and placement in the dash. Instead an Eclipse head unit with an outboard DA converter with digital audio input output was used for simplicity. We then made a program that put a picture of the radio on the 10.4" touchscreen and made a learning IR transmitter that the computer accessed to control the Eclipse radio by touching the part of the picture to control it.
