Problem with Internet Explorer 7

11/25/2007 6:55 PM

Since upgrading to Internet Explorer 7 I am unable to copy a URL from the address bar. If I highlight it then pull down "Edit", the "Copy" button is greyed out. I can highlight text and copy it at will. Only the address bar can't be copied. Before upgrading to Version 7 I had no problem copying a URL.

I have searched Microsoft's support library but can't find anything on this. Has anyone else had this problem, or know how to resolve it?

Thanks,

-John

Hello Johnjohn,

The best way to resolve this is not to use Internet Explorer at all.

I was advised some years ago to change over to the open-source free of malware: Firefox.

I tested it all out, made the change to Firefox, and never use IE at all now.

You can "import" all your favourites from IE into Firefox, at the time of installing it.

There are lots of excellent add-ons for the Firefox Browser.

Far more secure, and twice as fast, get Firefox free from here:

http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/

Hope that assists you, so you never bother about IE problems again....

Hi Johnjohn,

Try this and let me know if it works: Force IE7 to use the 'Classic' (pre-IE7) toolbar, i.e., File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, and so forth.

Open Notepad and type the following incantations:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

Save the file as toolbar.reg to your home folder.

Open a DOS-prompt terminal window.

CD to your home folder if not there already.

At the prompt, type: regedit.exe /s toolbar.reg

Close IE7. Or, in typical Windows fashion <sigh>, you may need to reboot your computer.

Restart your browser, enter a URL in the Address/Location bar and see if you can edit it.

Or, download Firefox and don't bother with IE at all.

Hi e,

I downloaded Firefox as you and Sparky suggested. That took care of the URL copy problem. Now I've just got to get accustomed to the differences. Looks like a good browser.

Thanks to you and to Sparky.

You're welcome! Firefox also has a number of add-ons, including some that increase the security of the browser against unwelcome "guests." My fave is NoScript.

Hi e,

Do you recall the problem I had with placeholders being placed in my replies to posts?

Problem solved, thanks to Mark. The problem was a Firefox add-on: "piclens" which I had installed. Once I un-installed it the placeholder problem went away.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Regards,

The only issues I've ever had with IE 7 was its incompatibly with older software that depended on IE. In all cases, I had to find a way to back-rev Java, as well.

Just in case ya wanted to know.

I absolutely love Firefox. Occassionaly an odd situation will arise but I think it is beacause the computer is used by 2 users operating 1 IE and the other Firefox.

Tabbed browsing is the life for me.

Opera is good when you read news. It has a nice feature of saving the sites you visited on its tabs when you close the browser. Leaving the tabs as they are you can come back to the same sites on the active tabs the next time you open the browser. Only one thing that does not work well (that works well with Firefox and IE) is when you copy and paste into Word.

Re: Problem with Internet Explorer 7

OPERA is slower than molasses on a broadband connection.

I did a side by side comparison with my laptop running Firefox 2.0 and WiFi, (which is slower than direct connection.)

I ran Opera 9 on my desktop, (screaming on-line game machine.)

Opera was very noticeably slower in loading sites.

It was very slow with sites with a lot of graphics and Flash Media.

I would also time a site load on the desktop using Firefox, Opera and IE7. Firefox was the clear winner.

I was disappointed with Opera as I had used it in the past and really liked it. But I guess the reason so many on-line gamers use Firefox is because it is the fastest browser currently available.

I have IE 7.0, Opera 9.23 and Firefox 2.0.0.9 on my notebook. My experience is Firefox loads web pages much faster than both IE and Opera. And it is more stable than IE when connecting to secured FTP servers. The only thing I'm still using IE is for updating Windows, other than that Firefox is my dominant web browser.

It still has a # of problems.

To copy try :

Hi-lite URL, Rt-click & COPY. OR Ctrl + C

=============

1. Menu is not visible & have to use 3rd party fix to bring it on top

2. paste a new url in bar it opens a new tab.

Any fix?

Problem 1 - Menu bar can be activatied/deactivated using the "alt" key. Unless you want it up all the time (rt click menu and check off menu bar)

Problem 2 - Most likely you have to change your option for "new url" to not open a new window (tab).

Hopefully that helps!

Re: Problem with Internet Explorer 7

Regards.

Advantages of External Browsers are many.

IE corrupts un-install & Install afresh is not possible without losing a lot of programs, but external browser can be installed un-installed as and when required. except you have to save your "Favorites" or "Bookmarks"

Downloder is built in Firefox [I am using Firefox] but you can not use DAP or other Downloader as most of the sites now do not allow direct download link. Firefox downloader has no "RESUME" facillity. Once you close it you have to download whole file afresh.

It may not be any problem in your country but here in under-developed countries we cannot afford except "Resuming" Downloadrs.

Another problem in all browsers is that copying text from these browsers do not copy URL-link embedded in text & you have to "Copy" each link one by one.

And links in IE are not problem as if you don't want to paste links just use Notepad instead of Wordpad.

IE has no "Ctrl + S" facility & it is through Fie Menu

Any how I am using both for different facilities.

Yet another undocumented feature of Windows...I'm using a company-owned machine and have not got the option of going to Firefox, Opera, or other non-Windows based browsers - just imagine how envious that makes me. I have a dream of one day using Linux-based applications only, but that's when I can afford a second home unit. With falling prices, perhaps soon; space will be the limiting factor, I suppose.

All,

Maybe it's me but I tried the copy URL via the File /Edit trick and of course it did not work. Then I went to the way of highlighting the URL and then right click the URL and the "copy" feature is available. Also if you use the shortcut keys "Ctrl - c" it works also with the "Ctrl - v" to paste. My version of IE7 is 7.9.5730.11 @ 128bit hopefully that also work for you!

"I have a dream of one day using Linux-based applications only, but that's when I can afford a second home unit."

You can now have the flexibility of loading Windows and Linux into a single machine without using any more special software. Installing Linux has been simpler than we've thought it to be.

Since it is a company-owned machine he's using, he's probably stuck with booting from a live Linux CD for the meantime. Kubuntu is a place to start. If he can burn iso images onto a CD, he can download the Kubuntu iso, burn it to CD, and then boot the machine under Kubuntu. If his machine won't boot from a CD, he'll have to edit his BIOS settings to change the boot-device order.

Yes! That's one way to use Linux with Windows.

If in the future, he owns a computer and wanted to also use Linux, with a good size hard drive, even with Windows pre-installed, he can still install Linux to that same machine. He will have the freedom to select at boot-up whether to go Windows or to go Linux.

Woof!!! I'm running IE 7 and have no problems whatsoever. Did you try this... Highlight the address and use Ctrl+c to copy, then Ctrl+v to paste. I don't think this is an IE problem - Do you have a registry checker program?

Hi vermin,

I took europium's and Sparky's advice and switched to Firefox. Been using if for two days now and am very impressed with it. It runs circles around IE (very fast by comparison).

The failure to copy URLs only showed up when I upgraded to version 7.x.x.. I could have used Ctrl+c/Ctrl+v but just lazy I guess in my old age. I expected the Copy button to be there and when it was greyed out I just kinda got fed up with it. The thing was slow anyway. I didn't realize how slow until I switched.

Yes, I have a registry check/repair program- "Regcure", and I used it almost daily along with Spyware Doctor.

please ref to Post #11 ::

I had been using in past for some time "Maxthon" but it was not competing IE.

Now for quite some days I downloaded Ver2 from & using it & it ismeeting most of my needs:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1167.html

IE based, Tabbed; good speed in comparisn to IE & MozilaFireFox, Copies embedded URLs etc etc.

It is like IE on Save-Page as:

all the Tabs are locked & you can not access any of the tab during saving any of the tabs

I personally recommend it at least for trial once.
