FTP site recommendation

11/25/2007 12:06 PM

Can anyone out there recommend (from experience) a secure, free, FTP site that can be used for transferring files bigger than the 3MB-ish e-mail limit?

I spent ages the other day sending just 12MB of data. Fortunately, no single part of it was bigger than about 2MB, so it was easy enough to break down.

Big problem arises with large photos or chunks of software. Photos can be uploaded to e.g. flickr or panoramio, which works, but it would be nice to find something that just took the data up and passed it back down (no matter what type of data).

Thanks in anticipation,

John

Hi John

Perhaps you may try this "free on line secure back up" site: http://mozy.com/

Best wishes

John, I use Linux and gftp. I have no problems with uploading or downloading. Also, Linux is open source so are most all of the tools, too. Look for those tools that are GPL. Almost all of Windows "stuff" is proprietary and will cost you an arm and a leg.

If everything else fails you could always split the file in 3mb chunks transfer and join later at ther receiving end.

I use MediaMax but there are many other sites that offer the same service. They have a free 25Gb on-line storage but I find it worth paying $45/year to allow me to e-mail links to uploaded files.

Does your ISP furnish you with space that can be FTP'd?

02/04/2008 1:31 AM

Well, a normal thread on CR4, answers about everything but what was asked about.

JohnDG asks for a secure free FTP site recommendation and the thread gets a bunch of replies about FTP software or file back-up sites. None of the recommendations answer his question.

Why? Can't people read and understand what was said?

The file back-up site require a person to install software, it is not FTP, and they have 10MB limits too.

The only limit on FTP is the size of the space available. I have several websites and can FTP to them, space available: 100+GB. Not MB, but GB. And I use it for dumping big files on it with FTP and downloading them somewhere else.

Does your ISP give you 25MB (or more, as part of your Internet access) per user to use as you see fit John? If so, it should be secure and you should be able to use it for an FTP dump.

Aside from that, I don't know of any free FTP access. There is no free lunch.

Just to repeat my answer in post #4, Mediamax gives free 25Gb FTP storage or you can buy more storage & extra facilities for a small annual fee.

Thanks, Nigh. Since my original request for info., I've been loaded down with hardware design work, so I haven't really had time to look into it.

Thanks also to all other responders.

John.

Hi Nigh,

From their website: Downloadable File Size Up to 10 MB

So, if you have a file over 10MB in size, you are out of luck. Correct? That is what their website says.

I signed up for their free account. It seems to let me upload a 15MB file, but will not show it. So I uploaded a couple of small 25KB files, won't show them either.

And they won't give an FTP address, they want a person to install their software and run FTP through that. Nope, not with me they aren't.

MediaMax seems to be pretty much a joke. It is not an FTP site.

Seems as if you upload too big of a file, (over 10MB) then you can't see any other uploads. At least none of them were showing up within 30 minutes after I uploaded them. I exited the website and re-entered it and still none of the four files I had uploaded showed in any of their file manager.

So, as an FTP site it rates a zero (0) since it requires a person to use their software to access it.

With an FTP site, all I need is an ftp:// address. I don't need their frontend and don't need them messing with my files.

It seemed to be pretty fast taking the 15MB file, about 4 minutes to upload it, but then the file went into limbo because it was over 10MB I guess.

John is still looking for a free ftp:// site that will take over 10MB files. I would be interested in seeing one too. MediaMax isn't one.

Have you tried to upload a file bigger than 10MB with a free account on their website Nigh? Maybe it will act different with you doing it. Here is a small 16MB file. It is a Micro Tools catalog. Should only take a minute or so to download from one of my websites, then upload it to MediaMax and tell us how MediaMax treats it. Thanks.

If you like tools, then the catalog is fun reading. Some of the things in it:

Hmm, there does seem to be some problem with uploads at the moment. I downloaded the catalogue (looks interesting, I will browse through it) & uploaded to Mediamax but, as you said, it will not appear in the file manager.

I have about 200Mb stored on the site & have regularly used it to send files over 30Mb so I know it works ok.

I don't use the Mediamax software, I upload either from their website or using a 3rd party ftp transfer programme.

I have to rush off tonight but I'll try the upload again tomorrow.

Hi Nigh,

What is the ftp:// address you are using to ftp with?

Ken

PS Ah, the files show up now, after an hour. But will not let them be downloaded because they are larger than 10MB. Have to pay money to do that, and the requisite was for it to be free.

The MediaMax site I was using for online storage has closed so I was forced to look for an alternative. I am currently trying Humyo.com which looks promising, you get 25Gb free or can get 100Gb for £2.50/month. You can create links to send to people you want to download files.

The interface is drag & drop, I've uploaded about 230Mb this morning & it seems to be working OK.

Thanks, Nigh. I've just checked out bt.com (my ISP), and they do 50GB for £4.99/month. Humyo.com looks like a (4X) better deal - let us know if you have any problems.

Cheers,

John.

Re: FTP site recommendation

Humyo seems to work OK. The upload appears to slow after a while but that may be our server dropping out. I uploaded 150Mb & 1.5Gb folders without any trouble but it's struggling a bit with the 8Gb folder I'm backing up now. I've discovered (the hard way) that there is no 'resume' feature. If you close the web site, the upload box goes as well & you have to start from scratch. If it is a folder being uploaded you can tell it to skip existing files.

I've sent a file link to my home PC & that takes you straight into the web site but hides all the other files.

It's certainly worth signing up to the free service & trying it. The storage is allocated to an e-mail address so I guess several people from the same company could claim free space if the have unique addresses.

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

BTW - my ex. was burgled last week - PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse & HP printer all gone, plus a load of installation CDs. Worst thing is that, despite all my exhortations, she hadn't backed up! 2 years of photos, letters, work in progress etc. all gone. (I'm backed up on external HD + DVDs). When she's back up'n'running, I'll insist she uses Humyo or something similar (it'll save me some earache)!

Re: FTP site recommendation

OK, I've discovered the limitation with the free version of Humyo. The 25Gb free storage is only for media files, music & photos etc. Other files are limited to 5Gb which is why I've been having trouble uploading. I've tried moving files into the media folders but it won't allow it. The free account will also delete your files unless you log in at least every 90 days.

Having said that, I'm still looking at upgrading to the premium account. This is £29.99 for the 1st year & £39.99/year thereafter. You get 100Gb storage for any file type plus the ability to e-mail any file size & publish files. Their desktop client looks interesting, it creates a virtual drive on your PC & will automatically synchronise your backed up files.

Re: FTP site recommendation

I'm now looking at Amazon web services. This is a paid for service but seems pretty cheap. There is no limit to the storage size & you pay for the amount of data stored plus the amount of data uploaded/downloaded.

The charges are;

Storage
$0.18 per GB-Month of storage used

Data Transfer
$0.100 per GB - all data transfer in

$0.170 per GB - first 10 TB / month data transfer out
$0.130 per GB - next 40 TB / month data transfer out
$0.110 per GB - next 100 TB / month data transfer out
$0.100 per GB - data transfer out / month over 150 TB

Requests
$0.012 per 1,000 PUT, POST, or LIST requests
$0.012 per 10,000 GET and all other requests*
* No charge for delete requests

Data transfer "in" and "out" refers to transfer into and out of Amazon S3. Data transferred between Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, is free of charge (i.e., $0.00 per GB), except data transferred between Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3-Europe, which will be charged at regular rates.

The page linked above has another link to a calculator to predict the monthly charge, for my situation it would be about $5/month.

There are 3rd party applications including Bucket Explorer which automate the upload/download & allow you to synchronise with several PCs.

While FTP is a choice, there are other choices. I met the founder of http://www.sendeaZy.com recently and looked at their product briefly. With FTP, either you share once account for everyone or create individual accounts for every client and deal with the password reset requests (most of them call back requesting the password or password to be reset.) With sendeaZy, you can send files and folders as large as 4 GB to anyone in the world simply using their email address.

Hope this Helps!

Chris
