How do i calculate thinkness for cylinder tank.

11/26/2007 1:47 AM

weights = 700kg

Cylinder Diameter = 3m

Height = 3.4m

Can u show me how to get the thinkness of tank?

Regards

Does the cylinder have flat or hemispherical ends?

Do you know the density of the material?

Desity= Weight/Volum

Volum=Weight/Density

Circumfarance x Height x Thickness = Weight / Density

Thicknes = weight / Density x Circumfarance x Height

Pour a known quantity of water V into the tank and measure the heigt H with a pole.The inside diameter Din will be given by SQRT(4V/PiH) and the thickness by

(Dout-Din)/2

The thickness of any tank depends on:

- Allowable stresses for the material to be used (material selected)

- Maximum internal or external pressure expected (design pressure)

- Shell diameter (given)

Knowing that, you can use the formulae given in any pressure vessel code (ASME Section VIII, AD-Merkblatter, etc.

Depending on the fluid to be contained and the material selected, you may need to add a corrosion allowance.

The thickness of the tank ends can be calculated using the same design parameters and the same calculation code once you have selected the type of ends (flat, hemispherical, torispherical, etc)

It's not possible to calculate the thickness with just the data given.

P.D. You can also get the formulae in any book with deals on shells under pressure (strength of materials) or in any formulae book (Roark)

Dear Amiehong,

Please refer to CR4 Forum Thread: Water Storage Tank Design dated 11.30.2007.
