How do you look on radiation food?

11/26/2007 2:45 AM

Although isotope has been using for half century. but still a little people know it tooks a important place in food industry. One example, garlic is a kind of vegtable which has many benefits to our body, but it cannt be stored for long time at ordinary condition. Scientists took advantage of isotope rediation to make the garlic store long time. Last sunday, when I pass by a open market, I saw some peasents were selling their dry garlic. very good looked and big. I try to buy some. the peasants toold me the garlic ws treaded by laser! I surprised by their words, its the first words I heard. I asked them how to tread by laser, from their description, I know its isotope treatment, rather than laser. Why they prefer lser than isotope? may they be afraid of radiation. but laser has no such effect. How do you think of radiated food? Are you afraid of it?

As long as they're not using neutrons (leading to neutron activation, which can produce nasty nuclides)! I don't have a problem with it.

I can, however, understand how uneducated people could be scared off by the word.

Irradiation creates minute quantities of URP's, Undefined Radiolytic Products. We don't know what they are but the government says they are so minute that, apparently, no matter what they are, they won't hurt you. We all trust the government, right?

Hi John,

It was 20 years ago when I researched it for an article I wrote for a food coop news letter. I would just google it for current info.

I don't think the peasants themselves tried to lie about the garlic treatment. Radiation has been very unpopular since Hiroshima event or more recently the Chernobil event.

That doesn´t mean that any use of radiation be harmful. Many people are still alive because of cancer cell irradiation.

People are, generally speaking, a bit skeptic when authorities or companies says : "Don't worry, this thing is not pollutant" because they have suffered the consequences a lot of times along the human history.

Anyway, the irradiation of foods with gamma radiation does not "activate" the food. The only consequence can be the modification or rupture of some moleculae. If such modifications don't result in hazardous products there are no reason to be affraid from such irradiation.

Don't forget that radiation is a colleague that is at every hour with us. All we are getting radiation dose from cosmic origin, from soil and rocks around us and even from ourselves (we all have in our chemical composition some radiactive isotopes of carbon and potassium)

Don't demonize knives because there exists some rippers.
