Single Phase Induction Motor

11/26/2007 8:17 AM

Is it necessary of capacitance in 1 phase induction motor.

Actually it is used to provide two phase at starting time. If starting winding and running winding difference in phase angle, starting winding(only inductor)provides two phase in single phase induction motor.

Quite so.

yes and once running the single-phase-produced field is distorted by the induced field in the rotor thus providing the means to continue rotation. In the old days it was necessary to start some motors rotating (by hand or other means) before energizing the stator windings.

Thats when you have no cap......which in some motors single phase motors (not all) it is called the starting cap.....

so..u mean if i use a single phase motor (lets say a drilling press).. i need to built a capacitor to it?

If so, is there any electronic way or electronic capacitor or stator that can serve this purpose? thanks.

Single phase INDUCTION motors generally need a cap to get started. If there is another method (other than spinning by hand first) I am personally not aware of it.

Other motor types are available that start without such capacitor help, the universal motor for example is one.......

Why the aversion to a starting cap? In some S.P.I. motors they stay in circuit and give extra power...
