API 5L Line Pipe

11/27/2007 5:20 AM

What are the methods to differentiate between a 1.5 inch grade A pipe & a 1.5 inch grade B pipe ? Do they share the same outer diameter, inner diameter & thickness ?

Pls advise. Thanks.

Yield and tensile strength.

Dimensions are the same, regardless of the strength of the material

The simplest method would be to check the Mill Test Report, assuming that you have the heat number from the mill on the pipe, as this will list actual test values for yield and tensile strength.

If you only have an unmarked piece of pipe, you have a problem. The different grades specify MINIMUM yield and tensile strengths, so the material may have been ordered to Grade A, and certifierd to grade A, but infact have physical properties that would allow its certification to grade B.

The only way to find out for sure would be to conduct tensile test on a sample.

Here's hoping you have a heat number!

Regards

I suspect tht LOH is not from the North America Continent. I haven't a clue if he can easily get the above info from the mill he is buying pipe from.

LOH, it would help if you would let us know what country the mill you are dealing with is located.

There are good odds that somebody close to your locality will answer with the needed info.

good luck.

Kindly advise. Thanks.

Black pipe usually refers to uncoated steel pipe, as opposed to galvanized etc.

Hey, I 'm from singapore also, I can confirm that in Singapore you can normally get the mill cert from the supplier. If you can't get one, cut a small piece and send it for testing, it won't cost much.

The same outer diameters are the same for the same NPS (e.g. 1-1/2 "). The inner diameters depend on the pipe wall thickness (schedule), if they have the same schedule, their inner diameters will be the same.

The difference is the chemical and mechanical properties are differ.
