How UV Light Affects Your Skin?

03/18/2021 4:20 AM

Ultraviolet rays (UV) account for only a small part of the sun's rays, but this is the main cause of skin damage. Exposure to ultraviolet rays can damage the DNA in skin cells, increase the risk of skin cancer, and accelerate signs of aging, such as fine lines, deep wrinkles and dark spots.

There are three types of ultraviolet rays: UVA, UVB and UVC. Let's take a look at their differences and how they affect the appearance and health of the skin.

UVA Light

UVA light is not absorbed by the ozone layer and can penetrate the human dermis, which is the deepest layer of the skin. UVA rays have many effects on the skin, including immediate redness and darkening of the skin, the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots. UVA also plays a minor role in the development of skin cancer because it causes the formation of free radicals in the skin.

UVA radiation can penetrate glass (windows), which is why doctors and dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen every day even if you don’t go outdoors every day.

Remember, UVA = aging!

UVB Light

UVB is another form of ultraviolet light. Unlike UVA rays, not all UVB rays can reach the earth because some rays are absorbed by the ozone layer. Because UVB rays are shorter and have a higher frequency, they are more harmful to the skin when they penetrate the epidermis (the top layer of the skin). UVB radiation can cause sunburn and delayed tanning. It plays a major role in the development of all types of skin cancers that cause DNA damage to skin cells and the immune system. UVB is also important in the synthesis of vitamin D3.

Remember, UVB = severe burns!

UVC Light

UVC rays are too short to pass through the earth’s atmosphere. Although UVC is the most dangerous form of ultraviolet radiation, it is completely absorbed by the ozone layer and usually does not cause skin cancer. Of course, at any given time and place, the amount of UV rays on the skin depends on many factors, including time of day, time of year, altitude, and cloud cover. You can refer to the UV index ranging from 1 to 11+ to see the intensity of UV rays in this area. A higher number means more UV exposure and a higher risk of sunburn and skin damage.

Recently, UVC LIGHTING has came into the public's attatention due to the breakout of the coronavirus. But it shoud be noted that it is harmful for human skin and eyes.

Or a reference to support those statements.

Good find! Clearly NOT written with a group of engineers in mind as the primary audience.

"UVA radiation can penetrate glass (windows), which is why doctors and dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen every day even if you don’t go outdoors every day."

I believe that's incorrect. In any case I would never go to those doctors. I don't wear sunscreen even outdoors. It inhibits the skin from manufacturing what is called "supercharged" vitamin D.

Agreed.

The transmission of UV through glass clearly (pun intended) depends on the kind of glass and the wavelength of the UV, and I don't believe there is any single wavelength where a given glass suddenly transitions from transparent to opaque.

I've never been to a dermatologist, and have used sunscreen 4 or 5 times during the last 80+ years, always when someone suggested and offered it.

On the other hand, I always choose to work and play in the shade whenever possible. If there is a shady side, it has to be pretty cold for me to "walk on the sunny side of the street".

The "negative" effects of UV on skin include: reduced risk of depression, cancer, heart disease, bone breakage - I could go on.

Great post about the harmful effects of UV rays on our skin. It's scary to think about the damage that can be done just by exposure to the sun!

They tell me it caused the Basal cell carcinoma on my face. It's to be removed later this month. They tell me they can do it layer by layer in one day. And I have other dis-colorations on my forearms. Especially the left one. The window arm.

Sounds like they're going to freeze it off with liquid nitrogen, this is just a temporary fix...If you have one section, you probably have several that will emerge over time...there is no cure that I know of, but there are several treatments....You can burn it off with weak acids, vitamin C, glycolic and other acids used in facial treatments, salicylic acid or liquid wart remover, these are best the earlier you can identify the rough patches...and much cheaper than liquid nitrogen applied by a dermatologist...but just as effective...imo ...but eventually you need to have it cut off at some point when a tumor forms, no big deal, out patient...

Life is a temporary fix.

It's good to know we have a board certified physician here for free consultations.

That's where they slice layers of the skin off one at a time, and keep going until there are no more cancerous cells left in the slice....this entails waiting for the lab results after each slice, and can take a while depending on the size and number of the skin patches...
