Concrete Finishing Tools

11/29/2007 9:48 PM

As a student completing research of concrete finishing tools, I am looking to understand and find out if hand power tools and dust control systems used in concrete finishing are evaluated or tested, and if so what is the agency that tests the tools. This is for tools manufacutured outside of the United States also. I am looking for help here. Thanks

As far as I have been able to research, there is no "Agency which tests the tools", as you ask.

Your local Authority, City Council, or State may well have their own special "Rules for Safety and usage" - OSH requirements for example, of such equipment.

There are "Standards" which do apply, in US normally "Underwriters Lab", UK is "British Standard" - Almost each Country has it's own "Standards", and so on.

Some earlier equipment ex the UK, did certify it conformed to "BS" = British Standard # xxxxx (whatever the relevant Standard Number was).

Having been among other things, for some years a Contractor, in various Industries including Construction Works in New Zealand, the best test was to use the tools or equipment - we soon found out the equipment which was unsuitable or unsafe.

The importers learned quickly, that it was a monetary loss for them, if they imported inferior or unsafe equipment.....

I don't know beans about power tool testing, but I do know about some other electrical stuff and I think it applies. It doesn't matter where the thing is made, but rather where it is sold and used. Some countries have voluntary compliance, some have mandatory.

There are a whole slew of approval organizations throughout the world. What you want to look at is called Notified Bodies. There's UL, CSA, etc. (there's probably a half dozen or so in Europe except I can't remember their names). Keep in mind that many (possibly all) notified bodies are for-fee and don't provide lots of free info.

If you just want good background info, you can't go wrong by looking at Cenelec, the European standard. Again, finding much info depends on paying for it (unless you can find a library that owns the documents).

I don't get it???

Unless you are going to actually polish the concrete, to a highly decorative finish...Why does it need finishing...?

Isn't it more cost effective to cast it with the desired finish in the fist place by using suitably finished shuttering?

What am I missing here?

Confused of Harlow.
