Is there a problem with Copyrights?

11/30/2007 1:35 PM

I find this, CR4, an interesting place. And when I find comments by users that are extremely informative, I would like to add their information to my blogcast. Am I infringing on any copyrights by doing so?

The words presented on the site do indeed belong to the authors who post them, but the content belongs to the CR4 site. As such, it can be linked to or quoted within the rules of the "fair use" doctrine, but cannot be lifted wholesale from the site, nor posted or broadcast without proper attribution (a link or spoken URL and title in the case of a podcast). Generally, it's acceptable to quote about three paragraphs worth of text with attribution. Beyond that, even with attribution, it begins to cross the grey line of copyright infringement.

Thanks Chris Leonard. I fully intended to give credit to the author & CR-4.

Wow what a post, never even considered it to be a problem.

I thought it could not be a problem as most info we quote tends to be from the world wide wobbly anyway which is already public domain.....isn't it?

Yeah I did run accross some before. Sometimes they just elaborate after a thread has died or something and then the poster or contributor continues elsewhere.

I also found thread subjects mentioned on science blogs before that were almsot a copy of what we started. Obviously the thread runs in a different direction as we have proper clever contributors here at CR4

I have never mentioned the origins of any material and also never seen any that credits the original! Should we?

I think we should acknowledge good material, doesn't hurt. I like giving credit to those who make a good contribution to any knowledge base forum. I like to mention CR-4 when ever i get the chance because it's a good site.

Some of my funniest moments have been checking stuff I heard on CR4. Google a phrase and I end up right back here ! LOL my socks off.

<ps £10 backhander says you wont give KrisDelTM enterprise any exemption. Thought not . We'll make do. Received wisdom compensates.>

Back on topic, it depends on what you can get away with. Patent and Copyright is fine as long as you can enforces it. If you have a really good idea/invention, then market and sell it locally. Fast. Next, when you have some revenue employ some darn good patent agents etc. Stop the sharks pinching your ideas, and like Mulder said "trust nobody".
