Generator Dimensions

12/02/2007 8:38 PM

Hello,
I have been reading CR4 for a while, but this is my first post... I was wondering if anyone knew how to figure out the dimensions of the Leroy Somer LSA 62 3-phase synchronous generator. I have contacted LS via their website "Contact Us" link, but have not heard back yet. Any assistance that anyone could provide would be very much appreciated.

Adam

P.S.: For background on why I am asking, please refer to my profile.

Leroy somer is a Caterpillar owned company and as a matter of policy of caterpillar they don't share any technical information as an employee of Caterpillar i could never get any information from Leroy somer.try contacting the dealer of CAT or Leroy somer you may stand a chance of finding the information you are looking for as Caterpillar is a dealer driven company and responds to the dealer with respect. Now i am no more with Caterpillar Now.Good luck

Hi guys

Are you sure about your Cat info? I thought LeRoy Somer only made the Cat SR-4 generators on contract basis. LeRoy Somer is French but they have a factory in Tennessee (I think . . somewhere down there) and build Cat's SR-4 line of Generators on contract licensee basis. LS owns Kato for sure. Try the link below to begin networking inside. I don't know anyone at LeRoy but I have contacts at Kato that can give me the inside numbers of LS. I assume you need only a dimension drawing and tech data sheets about short circuit current and bla bla bla. This is all standard published stuff for sure.

I am 100% sure when cummins bought over AVK Germany Caterpillar bought Leroy somer in France in 2003 if i remember right & (I was still with Caterpiller then)and all their units world over. However SR4 coupled packages are also in circulation in addition to Kato and leroy somer. In india All Cat packaged sets come with leroysomer alternators up to 1000Kva.Higher ratings are coupled with Leroysomer France.

It never fails to amaze me how slow some companies can be at supplying details like this to their customers. I would have thought any company would be glad of a large contract such as this, and would jump through hoops to provide the info - like yesterday! Leroy-Somers are French, and I have checked their website, but drawn a blank like yourself. As a seagoing Engineer, may I offer the following advice? Your new ship will probably have a central cooling system, and so the alternators will have a closed air cooling system, cooled by a water/air heat exchanger - normally mounted on the top of the alternator. The dimensions from LS may not include this, especially if you don't mention the fact, so don't forget to take this into account. Also, remember that you have to allow room for alternator maintenance. Lifting eyes above both bearings, lifting points for the cooler, and a way of getting the rotor out of the alternator from the non drive end, in case the worst happens, unless the LS alternators are split casing, and you can lift them off the top.
