Electric Speech

12/03/2007 9:38 AM

How would I add a voice message to an electronic device so when a minimum set point has been exceeded a verbal announcement would be made? I would like to add this to NOTIFY the operator of equipment that an error is present. I have a SLC-5/02 controlling the machine with a couple of I/O's available to use. I'm just not sure how to add the voice. I would like a different "Saying" for different messages, But would settle for a single message if nothing else. Such as "HEY Stupid look at the screen!"

Some twenty years ago, there was a speech synthesizer chip. I used to teach electronics and I remember that I have used it. The rest is just kitchen stuff (your announcements converted in hex, saved into a memory, and, at the right moment (your parameter has been reached or an alarm or ..whatever) your speech synthesizer will retrieve the message. Ah... you will ned an audio amplifier, too. Actually, the whole operation can be controlled by a PIC uController.

Thanks for the insight, You wouldn't by chance remember what the chip number was do you? I haven't looked for the chip YET but will soon. Thanks again.

I don't remember but things have evolved since. I googled speech synthesis and the first to see was:

which might fulfill your needs.

Yes, Bill, this is a great chip. If it has a message selection with individual addressing, I think that this is what our friend wants. I understand that he wants to have several messages that have to be selected as a function of different situations. I had not time to browse through all their product line so I don't know which has the capability of selecting message (if necessary, of coarse).

Yes this chip does do individual addressing. It has a SPI interface. I have used the PIC16f873 chip to control them. They have several varieties with different size message capabilities..up to like 16 mins if I remember right.

Anyway, I have used these for the same kind of deal and its pretty easy to implement. Only down side is they are kind of pricey...But if this is a one off custom design then its ok. If its a small production run it bad. I am sure you can get a good price if you were buying a ton of them.

Good luck my friend!

PS feels good to give back...Probly the first time I have really been able to help!
