12V DC Motor End Cap and Brushes

03/26/2021 12:13 PM

I am trying to source a replacement end cap and brushes for the winch motor on my lift gate. The Lift gate manufacturer (here in the US) only has whole motors which they source from China.

I just need to be able to replace the brushes and they have their shunts crimped into the lug terminals inside the end cap, so the whole assembly must be replaced.

This seems to be normal for winch motors as I have found replacement end caps for other brands. But I can't find mine!

Here are a couple of pics of what I'm trying to find:

Help! I need a part number or a supplier. The motors are common but I can't seem to find the one part that wears out.

Cut the lead as close to the brush as possible.

Measure the dimensions of the brush, and do a google search.

If you cannot find the exact size, remember the brushes can be sized by using flint paper (not emery cloth) to adjust to your needs if you order one a little larger than original.

If the brushes have a copper-ish look, search for a similar composition brush. They are normally found in high-current motors

Order one with the leads attached, and solder the leads to the ones left on the original brush holder.

Dress the leads neatly not to interfere with their motion as they wear down.

Here is one site that may have what you need, there are many more on Google.

I have already found some shunted brushes at helwig. I may do as you say and splice them in if I can't locate an end cap assembly.

Thank You!

If I rebuild the cap, I'm going to use a higher grade brush material if I can. They are 6mm x 8mm x 13-15mm shunted off the bottom rear.

I have found copper and silver impregnated brushes. Is this what I should get or is there some specific grade that is best?

You need to take the insert out by removing the four phillips head screws....

..need more info....

Wide variety of brushes and end cap mounts and such...

https://carbonbrushes.ca/

Starter motors have similar configurations....

That is end cap for Briggs etc. I mentioned in the OP. They are available from several sources but I don't know if they will fit my motors.

I would go with the same type as the factory installed brushes.

The variations in brush composition vary widely, including abrasiveness, hardness, and current capacity.

Your brushes look like a copper/carbon compound after I zoomed in on the photo.

A silver brush may or may not be better.

A chocolate colored commutator is a sign of healthy commutation, and a good match for the brushes.A shiny commutator is an indication of brushes that are too abrasive.A very dark one indicates the brushes are too soft.

Burned section or spot on the commutator indicates a shorted stator or commutator.Trash it.

Check for a short to shaft with an ohmmeter.

Silver brushes must have a certain amount of current to keep them clean, but even silver oxide( black) is a good conductor,so the powder may cause a short in the future if everything is not matched up properly, including spring pressure, etc.

To seat the new brushes, wrap a piece of flint cloth around the commutator, and tape the edge.Allow the brushes to contact the cloth, and rotate the commutator a few revolutions. This will conform the brush face to the curvature of the commutator.

Good luck.

Very practical advice.

DC Motors and Carbon Brushes is a very complex mix of chemistry, electrical magnetic field theory, and mechanical physics.

During my electrical apprenticeship in repairs of the electric motor saw on many occasions the disastrous results of maintenance personnel changing brush grades.

I found that too! I seriously thought of buying the minimum lot just to have the parts!

The lift company wants $115 just for the motor.

At least the min order is 1.

$40 - winch

$260 - Shipping to US.

Me - nope.

I found the manufacturer through the lift company. Ningbo Antai Winch company. Their min order is 20.

I think I'm going to do the Hitechredneck thing and put my own brushes in.

Just an idea. Could you replace the motor with a windscreen wiper motor: either new or from an auto scrap yard?

Nearly anything can be adapted to just about anything if you have the time and resources.I once adapted a Briggs mower starter motor to a boat motor lift.

It worked great but required some machining work to make it adapt to the original housing. And then there was the problem of water proofing the whole assembly.

It worked great, and the motor practically flew up when you hit the button.

Had to put in some limit switches to stop it.

Factories nowadays seem to want to make everything proprietary to keep the customers coming back for parts or replacements.

They don't care about repeat customers, just make that quarterly return, don't worry about the annual.

Most computers become boat anchors after 3 or 4 years.

The repair cost exceeds the replacement cost, and they go to the landfills.

And surface mount components are very hard to replace without special equipment.

And,IMHO, the apple-cider repair centers are a joke.

Software companies are especially bad for this, but there is a revolt building to make goods more repairable by the consumers.

I see some progress, but I hope it grows exponentially.

I pulled the cap apart and it looks like the shunts are soldered to a steel bolt for the lead-in terminal. I can work with that.

I found a brush manufacturer in Hayward CA (less than 80mi from me) that I am going to call on Monday. I hope they can make this assembly, because if they can, I have buyers!

Or, perhaps they can just make the brush with the shunt on it.

Also, you are correct about the brush composition. With the brushes out they appear to be copper/graphite.

My son worked for a company that made brush assemblies and brushes for major manufacturers, including Detroit's automotive sector.

Chances are the local company has the setup for the brush assembly you need.

If not, talk to a technician and he may have a possible solution.

Take the brush assembly with you.

A picture is worth a 1000 words, but the actual item is worth a million.

And yes,the company will likely make any assembly for you if you order a certain minimum and pay the setup costs. Not cheap, but doable.

No I cant. These are high current high torque motors that are 3" in diameter. One motor is used most of the time to lift 1200lbs. The other two lower and raise the stabilizer legs and can lift the back of my truck nearly off the ground.

I've retired but it looks a lot like an outboard starter motor. Check out Ebay 'outboard starter motor brushes' and find things like this... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Starter-brush-and-card-assembly-for-a-Johnson-or-Evinrude-outboard-motor-386105/113724104170?epid=576718883&hash=item1a7a7c1dea:g:cMMAAOSwZ3Ja2URX ....then take your pick if it seems to fit. Good luck.

You right it does look like it but the outboard starter is not metric.

I would like to put one on my 1967 Johnson 9 1/2 if there is one that fit! Not that it needs it. It starts with one or two pulls any way!
