Fiber Optics and Cable Noise

12/05/2007 11:13 AM

Hi...does anyone knows whether does fibre optics cable induces noise in the cable? Also can a normal power cable be in the same cable tray as a VFD signal cable. Lastly, is there any guideline max. nos of wires can be placed in a single cable tray w/o inducing noise? many thanks...

Fiber optics are noise free.

Yes you can place power and VFD cables in same side of cable tray. You need to separate signal and power though by a small distance. If the signal cables are shielded, ground the shielding at the grounding point in the control panel or electrical enclosure. (not both ends) There is a maximum number of wires allowed by US code for cable trays. This is based on "fill" in the cable tray, not noise. If you are worried about noise, you need to design to reduce this.

Good luck,

James
