How Does a DVD Player Remember Where a DVD Stops?

12/06/2007 2:29 AM

Good day to everybody, I have always been curious on how a DVD player remembers where a DVD stops and is able to resume playing at that point where it was stopped. Is the stop point kept at the software of the DVD player? Many thanks for your help!

Hey nice question...

I have no idea...but if I was designing it, I'd merely keep the last location in non-volatile memory ready to be recalled next time.

Dunno how the locations are worked..tracks and sectors?

Hello Guest,

The CD/DVD "track" is a single continuous spiral of "pits" (Mechanically hot pressed in the case of "original CD/DVD), or "burn holes through an organic dye" (In the case of a Writeable CD/DVD), or Melted pits (in the case of Rewriteable CD/DVD), from the inner circle to the outer circle.

There is a "memory chip" in the player, which literally "keeps track" of the position of the actual read laser all the time during play.

The CD/DVD player read laser follows the track spiral, keeping the mechanical parts following, and keeps that memory chip updated at all times.

The memory chip retains that setting, (in coded form), when you pause or stop playing the DVD or CD.

So, at the instant of "Resume Play" the memory chip tells the read laser where to go, and once at the correct position, the CD/DVD is read, the information quickly verified, the read laser "backs up about 1/4 second", and then the Disc Play is resumed.

Please appreciate the above explanation is somewhat simplified, the process is actually quite complex, with feedback loops, error correction, and more....

hi sparkstation,

I've heeded your advice. Although I doubt I will be much of a contributor with my limited knowledge. But thanks anyway!

Good for you, gelearn,

Knowledge arrives in building blocks of information,or a ladder.

We all start at the bottom of the ladder, just a shame some folks never actually try to climb the ladder of knowledge.

As your Store of Knowledge increases, it becomes more and more easy to learn more, and it becomes faster to learn.

Looking forward to seeing more of you, in the days, weeks, months ahead, and here's a new hat for you.

Kind Regards.....

Hi Spark station,

Your words are quite encouraging. Many don't come out with their views / qurries thinking only they in the world not much aware of things. As u rightly said knowledge is accumulation of information. Keep inspiring folks....

Thanks Sparkstation.

I also responded to Del The Cat and talked about your very informative answer. I always wanted to find out but was afraid to ask. I had given him my layman's explanation how it works as I thought.

Thanks for broadening my horizon.

Regards;

Very well explained! I think it's safe to say that most of us have wondered "how they do that"...thanks for a simple and informative description of the process.

The DVD or CD is all digital data and as such it has an address just like the HDD in your computer.

As for finding cars I bought a bright yellow one. The kids call it the "duck." You can always find it in the car park.

'how to remember where I parked my car'

That's what the central locking tabs for, you just walk around the car park, clicking it, and as soon as a car flashes it's lights at you, jump in and drive away!

I think remembering the car park park, or at least the town, should be a bare minimum requirement for driving!

The car park park. ??

Is that a new invention to save space ...you stack the car parks on top of each other? Like a sort of multi multi storey storey car park park??

It wouldn't play..

It wouldn't play for me either.

Perhaps it was cars after being crushed, on top of each other.....

Re: How Does a DVD Player Remember Where a DVD Stops?

Counting the "pits" on the CD could be feasable, but not ideal...

How would you insert a CD/DVD into the player and jump to track5?

The player would have to first count the amount of pits on the player, and work out where track 5 was located, imagine how long it would take to "index" each CD/DVD you have?

Nah, a easier aproach is to write a "TOC" or Table of Contents, this gives the track layout of the CD, the track order, the location of each track on the disk, the length of each track, total playing time, and on some CD's the names of each track similar to MP3's ID3 format..

Check out "Blue Book" on Wiki -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Book_specification

and there are other "Books" dealing with other formats..

I did have a bound copy of the orange book once .... dunno why I had it tho.
