All the same color, sort of brown. The apparent difference in color comes from the stripes which your eyes ignore.

I see three different "colors" but the colors change depending on how much I magnify the image. At the default resolution all of the orbs are pastel, shaded colors of green (Henry), blue (George) and brownish red (Agnes). A partial magnification makes Henry to be yellow, George to be grey and Agnes to be a slightly different shade of orange/red. With extreme magnification I see vibrant rectangles of blue, red, or green at various luminosities but no longer any circular, orb like images.

In all cases the apparent spherical depth of these orbs is an illusion for my laptop has a flat screen.

Still, this image is a very nice optical illusion.

It would seem that color resolution is much coarser than the resolution of detail. There are blue, green, and red horizontal stripes, two of which pass behind each ball and the third in front. The perceived ball color is determined by the color of the stripes which pass in front, and the brain assigns this color to the entire ball, not to just the stripes.

There is a difference between a measured colo[u]r and a perceived colo[u]r.

There are also differences in monitor color accuracies.

I see a slightly purplish blue, a yellowish green, and a light orange. Enlarging it makes the stripes more obvious, but does not change the orb colors perceptibly for me. 2014 MacBook Pro Retina screen.

After enlarging it several more times, The blue orbs do turn brown, The green ones become tan, but the orange ones stay orange:

Took me a while but I finally see the dragon. Or at least the illusion of one.

It took me a fair number of seconds to see it as well. Back in the day (around 30 years ago, IIRC) they were called Stare-e-os. I still have several files from '93, but none of them will open with my current software.

There are no orbs. There are only multicolored lines, some of them broken.

There is no continuous line which would define the full orbs shape.

Sorry. I am clueless. Even when I magnify the picture a 1000 times I still see three different colors in each of the orbs.

Which goes to say that you probably do not want me recording color data for you experiments. :)

Re: What Colors are the Orbs?

The image size is 180x320, about 100 pixels per inch on my screen. Magnifying 1000x would mean one pixel would be a square 10 inches by 10 inches.

The computer screen has a certain resolution, pixels per inch. When a picture is displayed, the picture pixels have to be remapped into the screen pixels. When a picture is resized (magnified), this remapping has to be redone. There are various ways to do this remapping, and "smoothing" is often done to remove a "blocky" appearance. The end result is adjacent colors getting blurred together.

Another factor is image compression. Files with a ".jpg" extension have gone through an algorithm to re-code the contents of the picture into fewer bytes. This can also cause blurring between adjacent colors.

An actual drawing, which could be optically magnified, would be a lot more convincing. The jpg compressed image, which is also resized for display on the computer screen, has artifacts that obscure the effect that is intended to be demonstrated.

Are you saying that digitally reproduced pictures cannot be trusted to be an accurate representation of reality?

You are correct. I used PAINT to magnify the photo. I used 300 hundred percent and then 300 percent again. My quick thinking was that was 300 x 300 in magnification. But actually that is only a magnification of 9 times (i.e. 3 x 3).
