You might want to check with Atlas Copco air compressors. They have VFD screw type "Oil Free" compressor line. We have quite a few of them and they are very good units.

You have some homework to do.

What is the duty cycle you expect? How many hours per week, what percent load during different shifts, and what percent load from various departments or operations?

Efficiency is related to whole compressed air system. There have been several posters that have stated on various threads the importance of minimizing pressure drops and leaks within the system. Design the pipe loops to keep velocity on the low side.

Your operating cycles will influence whether you buy one full size compressor (with backup if production is critical) or use multiples of 50%, 33%, 25%, or 20% compressor stations. It may also affect whether you use a central station or have compressors distributed through the shop.

If you don't think you're up to the task of sorting this out, Atlas-Copco or Kaiser compressor seem to be good companies that look to low life-cycle compressor costs. Other vendors seem more concerned with giving you the cheapest compressor.

Let us know how your shop operates, and myself and others can provide more precise advise.
