What surprises do you think the James Webb telescope will discover?

I expect this telescope will dramatically extend how far back in time and therefore closer to the Big Bang event itself than we've ever examined. I anticipate this deep exploration into the past will modify our cosmological beliefs in subtle ways. One speculation I read about a subtle cosmology change was the plausible idea that multiple minor inflationary periods left "ripples" in the inflation.

Another speculation of what this telescope might find that I personally have is many more brown dwarf stars will be located in interstellar space. These dwarfs and other low-energy objects won't provide enough "stuff" to solve the dark matter paradox but enough to make finding more dark matter without resorting to "ghost" matter feasible. Possibly even some low-energy matter within intergalactic space.

Maybe, just maybe the James Webb will be able to "see" a black hole independent of an accretion disk.

Right now, our theories of the history of the universe are based on extrapolation from the point in the past which we can observe. The Webb telescope will give us many more data points, and will either strengthen existing theory or uncover new information that will require revision. Either way will be interesting.

It amazes me that they can fold that thing up for the rocket ride. I hope everything unfolds OK, both the heat shield and mirror.

Two things are sure. There will be surprises and it will add to our confoundation and not subtract from it. We always get more questions than answers with these new instruments.

Well, if they were predictable, then they wouldn't be <...surprises...>.

I predict an IR glow in every direction. And an apparency, of a density increase with distance, due to superposition. A dust map and a dust mask for the MW.

It's up and on the way!

It will take a long time to get to L2 and fully deploy. Last I heard they expect the first images no sooner than six months from now.

"Starting 31 minutes after launch, and continuing for about 13 days, JWST began going through the process of deploying its solar array, antenna, sunshade, mirror, and arm.[170]

Nearly a month after launch, a trajectory correction will be initiated to place JWST into a halo orbit at the L2 Lagrange point."

Thanks for keeping us up to date, SE. I am very curious whether the telescope will clear up the dark matter issue as the video suggests. I have had reservations about DM for some time, but there has not been a better explanation so far. Maybe it can actually see some evidence one way or another.
