Wow!

Just to be sure, I edited and re-sized a screen shot

And cut out the frames

Then taped the mask over the screen.

Still works perfectly. It's actually better if you cover the distracting arrows in the middle.

I've been puzzling over how this works. If you cover up the little arrows, the effect is still there.

After looking at the video in slow motion, I think the answer is that the cube changes from black to white and white to black not all at once but sequentially, as if it were moving into light and shadow. The effect is very subtle.

The intermittent blinking gives the apparent motion. The arrows suggest a direction.

That’s cool…

A lot of these optical illusions uses how the brain will fill in the blanks…

like seeing faces or objects in clouds or rock formations… even though there are faces in rock formations..
