Shuttered malls as solar farms

01/20/2022 9:10 AM

Why not use the many shut down malls as a solar farm? The expense of set up would be much cheaper than on land.

3 Phase power is available on every building, and connecting multiple buildings together in a mall would be relatively inexpensive.

Batteries could be placed on ground floors to reduce roof weight.

I realize that flat roofs are not designed for foot traffic, but with proper design of the system, leaks could be prevented.

Land is expensive to purchase and incurs a lot of cost to prepare.

Rooftop solar sounds like a win-win situation to me.

Constructive comments are always welcome.

All that is needed is commercial backing.

Because the breakeven is 20-30 years...no money to be made, and requires upfront money=risk...so requires gov money and incentives and guarantees from local power companies=complicated....

And those shuttered malls, the maintenance, lack off that is. Is falling into disrepair that it’s cheaper to level them.

and if there is new life into them, there is such a large make over, the cost of taking down the panel would prohibit it.

On a similar direction of this thread, I saw, large building (used for laser tag and gaming) maybe 20,000 square feet and less then 2 years old leveled for new construction.

which makes you think, having contract for solar on new buildings… like they do with windmills.

and on another direction of this thread, how about gasification of manure off of dairy farms.

Cow manure is worth more in composted fertilizer form...

You still have that as a byproduct.

I've seen shopping centers with a large "anchor" store in the middle purchased by corporations and turned into office space and sometimes manufacturing as well since there is usually loading docks and the like, plenty of parking, easy access to major thoroughfares, etc.

I've always thought that solar on commercial buildings is just an ancillary operation. Plus it gives the corporation the opportunity to say, "Look at me."

Can shut down or active shopping malls be converted into solar farms? Yes, they certainly can but the question always comes back to money. It is unlikely that retrofitting decaying mall space for solar arrays and battery storage will pay off any time soon.

Roofing over the parking lot of a mall with a solar array might provide sufficient power reduction and a "going green" bragging advertisement value to keep a mall financially afloat. As usual, the location and nominal weather conditions will be critical to this scenario.

The local leadership at the company site where I work wanted to do exactly this, but corporate leadership wasn't willing to make the 'investment'. Corporate types love to talk the talk, but they don't always walk the walk. I'd love covered parking, especially in the summer months.

Corporate leaders are that way… challenge them on their word, and you're on the outside looking in.

those wind shades are pretty useful, yet I have yet to buy one…

but I do have an automatic one on my back window that I can raise and lower.
