Generator Idle Speed Problem

12/07/2007 11:23 PM

Dear All

I have bought a second hand Honda generator 220V single phase 5KVA for domestic use. I haven't its documents/manual. Now I have a problem that when I start it, its idle speed is not linear, fluctuates as volt meter displays 170V-200V. I want to tune it but don't know the method. Can any one help me any way?

Hello Signode,

You don't advise your location, or your particular Model/Serial Number of Honda product..

You could look at this website:

http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/gen.asp

Click on the "Contact us" at the top right of that webpage.

The alternative is to take your machine or the Model/Serial Number to a local Honda agent, and ask for help.

Advise here, how you proceed, thank you.....

Some generators will surge in the manner you mention if they are unloaded, especially so if their control system is not as it should be in some manner. Get a larger resistive load on it (something like a 1000 watt light bulb) and see if it steadies out before trying to tune the unit.

Good and accurate advice and if that does not help, go to Honda.

Download a manual for free here. If you have a 220 Volt 2000 watt hair dryer this is a good load, and can vary to half load with different heat setting. See if this stabilises the engine. These little engines are sensitive at no load, as pointed out by others. Dirty fuel systems and other 'adjustments' that are 'stuck' or blocked by fuel varnish (old fuel sitting around long enough to evaporate and leave a deposit) causes some of these problems. If you are not near a dealer, try a bottle of fuel system cleaner as a simple try first.

Let us know what you found wrong so we can all learn and help others.

Thanks for replies.

When I connect some load, its speed stables.

There is a selectror switch "Throttle Auto Manual". If I set the it at Manual and then adject the voltage by seeing voltmeter, it starts well. But if i set it at Auto, then I face the problem written my first post.

Its normal....I checked one out once using a scope, it was quite amazing how little difference the "hunting" made to the frequency when unloaded.....I had expected larger changes according to my ears!!!

I had the same problem with my Honda 6 kw. I ended up always running in manual as Auto fluctuated to much when load was small.

Probably the reason for having a manual/automatic switch......don't you agree?

Signode, not very good from you, the idea of a Blog (which you started) is that you read all the replies!!!

I also believe that you have never stated where you live in this world, which generally means you live in the USA and think the rest of us must know that automatically!!

Also a mistake!!

Please initially supply full and correct information, read the replies and thank the people nicely that stayed around and help you!!

I'm off.....
