Pneumatic advantages:

Cost. Initial and life time service.

Adjustability of Torque and Speed.

Repeatably of Torque.

Lighter in most cases.

Much sturdier and able to handle accidental and deliberate abuse.

This is why most industrial manufacturers and assemblers use pneumatic tools.

The trend is actually exactly the opposite:

more and more users (the most intensive users are the car manufacturers) use electric nutrunners for very simple but important reasons:

- pneumatic nut runners do not allows tightening strategies (as torque-angle or yield limit tightening) and the more complex are the joints the more complex have to be the approaches, the general evolution is toward complex strategies all over the world.

- pneumatic nutrunners do not allow a traceability of the done tightenings, this second reason is very important in order to detect early enough a shift in the torque and avoid too many wrong operations.

I do not disagree with the other qualities of pneumatic tools but there is as well an economic aspect. Although pneumatic tools are less expensive as price they use an expensive energy -compressed air. So that according to different computations the total cost of ownership seems to be lower for electric tools than for pneumatic.

And lest but not least if you need a low uncertainty of the obtained torque values obtained with electric tools are about 50% less dispersed.

I know that Toyota uses electrical tools wherever possible for the above reasons - in fact they advertise the fact that the electrical tools are more consistent in the plant.

I've done a lot of manufacturing engineering for automotive suppliers and electrical is the way to go if SPC is critical for reporting. Pneumatic by far is cheaper and easier to maintain plus they are typically more robust. As discussed above, electric is more precise and accurate with achievable Cpk values of 2+.

There are trade-offs that must be evaluated - cycles, takt time, maintenance, support, SPC, and accuracy. Once those are understood, a logical decision can be made. If you can elaborate on your application, we might be able to help with a decision.

Safety though pneumatic guns are not completely safe. The electrical cords on electric tools do not hold up as well as air hose. Periodic inspection of the tool necessary to limit electric shock.
