Optimize flight schedules for two parties from different cities

06/23/2022 12:41 PM

I live in Minneapolis. My brother lives in Dallas. We want to fly to Houston and meet. Then want to depart Houston 2 days later. We are flexible on which days, but want to fly late Sept or Oct, and want to travel between 8am and 4pm and only nonstop.

1) There are many flights for both of us. How can we quickly determine which flights to use so we arrive and depart Houston at about same time (within 2 hours, say).

2) He wants to fly American. I don't care which airline, but want first class.

3) How do we also minimize the total cost for the 4 flights?

I might do some spreadsheet (ideas?), but I wonder if there is a site or program that could crunch the numbers and present options, sorted by days, wait times and cost. It would seem to be a common problem.

Try calling a Travel Agent. They have access to all the timetables and may even have software to solve problems like these.

I would try Booking.com for comparison...

If a one of your or your brothers company has a travel agent use them..

or… do the leg work your self and get on a airline (Delta, AA etc…) web site.. and book it. They also have multiple cities for stops such as fly out of Minneapolis to Dallas to ?, but it doesn’t sound that’s what you want.

but have you or your brother book for both of you… so you can connect.

According to Google, Dallas and Houston are only a four-hour drive apart. Getting through TVA security and flight time will mean your brother can only hope to gain two to two and a half hours each way. Is this worth the hassle of dealing with two airline schedules, airport parking, and possible lost luggage?

Yeah, he wants to fly. He's a player, getting mileage and keeping his American Platinum status.

I should've guessed that since he insisted on using just one airline. On the plus side, that limits the number of combinations.

Since he wishes to gain American Airlines miles, he could fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul and maximize his mileage.

Please tell us you at least suggested this obvious idea.

If you have a pilot's license you can rent a plane, and set your own schedule...

Get your brother to book your flight on American from Minneapolis to Dallas (you repay him of course) then share a car from Dallas to Houston.

The way airlines are opperating these days, you would be better off walking to your destination. At least you would not be stuck with an eternity in Hell ( airline terminal) when your flights have been canceled.

When I plan trips like this, I usually start with a site like Google Flights or Kayak. You can put in where you’re flying from. Playing around with different dates can help find cheaper options since prices often change depending on the day. If you’re looking for a bit more comfort, it’s worth checking out business class flights. I’ve found some good deals that way when I’ve been flexible with my travel dates.
