New Moon Picture

08/24/2022 6:30 PM

Two astrophotographers have just dropped what they call "the most ridiculously detailed picture" of the Moon – the result of a painstaking, neck-craning effort roughly two years and over 200,000 frames in the making.

That doesn't look right... too much color...

This can be a good discussion…

It’s interesting what color is it really. As I understand it, the color refracted is dependent of the material refract-ability that actually refract the wavelength of light.

its like saying, I see you high color resolution picture of the moon… and raise you a yet higher color resolution of the moon… so to speak…

also detail resolution is one thing,… color is another.

as far as color…with the ability to ‘artificially’ change the lighting, filtering, color, et al now-a-days… one is walking on thin ice between reality and fantasy… philosophically speaking.

It's interesting that I have never noticed any color while directly observing the moon.

Perhaps the coloration becomes evident at the demarcation of light and dark so that if you collect enough images of the moon as the demarcation travels across the observable face of the moon, maybe then the color appears ?

I think the light reflecting off a rough surface causes diffusion and results in the colors combining to a whitish light when viewed from a great distance...

There are certain colors that cannot be reproduced by RGB.

They can "green out" a background so that it is invisible on the tv.

The weather reporter does not have a map behind ,it is simply a projection. There is a blank green wall behind. If he was wearing a certain color green suit, and green paint on his face,he would look like the invisible man.

I brought it up, because I recently saw that ‘scientists’ came up with an algorithm to see the true colors under the sea…

Underwater photos are often blue-tinted because of the way light bends in water, obscuring the incredibly vibrant colors of ocean flora and fauna.

Also, depending on the depth, some of the wavelengths of light may not penetrate through the water.

...detail resolution is one thing,… color is another.

"Detail resolution" is straightforward. My understanding of color resolution is that you have many narrow optical bands instead of just blue, green, and red. In the extreme, every pixel in the image would have a spectrum associated with it. The image would be a 3-dimensional block of data, encapsulating much more information than can be processed through our crude 3-channel (RGB) visual system.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperspectral_imaging

It would seem that astronomy would be an obvious use of hyperspectral imaging, where the spectral "color" of different minerals known to be present on the moon could be matched to the 3-d image block.

Four views of the Mare Imbrium basin and the Chang’e-3 landing site demonstrate how different the Moon looks to different types of remote sensing, underscoring the need for ground truth to calibrate the orbital observations. Image credit: NASA/LPI.

Yes, and I recently read, that only a small percentage of people can see like 64? bands (could be more, I don’t recall) and others see less. They actually printed the bands. And you count the bands to see where you lie.

I’ll have to look for the article.

Some few women have a fourth cone type.

https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-have-found-a-woman-whose-eyes-have-a-whole-new-type-of-colour-receptor

Even women with trichromatic vision supposedly have better color vision than men. My wife is always telling me when what I'm wearing doesn't match (whatever that means ).

Women have a stronger sensitivity to green than men, probably an adaptation to allow men to see through greenery better when hunting and to see camouflaged prey better.

A color blind friend of mine said that a gray squirrel stood out on a gray limb, but to me,it blended in,hardly visible.I could not see it unless it moved or twitched it's tail.

The colors are correct, but the saturation has been increased to make details more visible to the human eye.
The reds are iron and feldspar, the the blues are titanium.

Oxidation influence from Earth also affect the colors as we se them.

Earth must be quite an influence.

‘The mineral is a form of iron oxide, or rust, produced when iron is exposed to oxygen and water. Even though the surface of the Moon is known to have iron-rich rocks, it is not known for the presence of water and oxygen, which are the two elements needed to interact with iron to create rust.

here’s more details on the influence of earth to the moon.

Some meteors and comets carry water and oxygen, and could provide enough for oxidation of iron on the moon.

There is also a difference between the measured colo(u)r, the perceived colo(u)r, and the correct representation of colo(u)r, something that always challenge the manufacturers of imaging systems that depend on the cyan/magenta/yellow subtractive imaging systems.

That’s the problem or advantage of CCD cameras… depends how you look at it…

Stray a little bit further… even as a pre-teen, I often wonder if people saw color the same way as I saw color…

An example, do they see the color purple as I see it, or do they see the color purple as I would see as green.

Re: "New Moon Picture

when I learned about Color blindness is what started me thinking about that.

Still, it’s a perception. Digressing further… I hope my point will get across.

Let’s say two individuals

  • person 1
  • person 2

have the same cones and rods within their sight.

How does one know where person 1 perceives an object as purple,

person 2 sees it as purple,

but if person 1 looks through person 2 eyes the color purple is actually color green in person 1 eyes, but both call it and know it as purple.
Since we somewhat off the rails, yet on topic …Now let’s talk about cone and rods and color blindness…

Rods and cones

Featured snippet from the web

Rods are responsible for vision at low light levels (scotopic vision). They do not mediate color vision, and have a low spatial acuity. Cones are active at higher light levels (photopic vision), are capable of color vision and are responsible for high spatial acuity. The central fovea is populated exclusively by cones.

The military actually would use people that are color blind to take point because they can distinguish object such as people in low light.

and I experience this to be true.

An example, do they see the color purple as I see it, or do they see the color purple as I would see as green.

Assuming two individuals with normal color vision, it is impossible to say whether they both experience "green" the same.

To compare two things, the same person has to experience both to compare them, impossible in this case, IMHO.

What was the orange dirt on the moon?

Lunar geologists now think that the orange soil was created during an ancient fire-fountain. Detailed chemical and dating analyses indicate that during an explosive volcanic eruption 3.64 billion years ago, small drops of molten rock cooled rapidly into the nearly spherical colored grains. ..May 23, 2001

Color is in the eye and the brain of the beholder. There are certain people that have 4 color receptors(cones) instead of 3,and their brain has the ability to interpret them. The people are called Tetrachromat. They can see 100 millions colors that ordinary people cannot see.

https://www.popsci.com/article/science/woman-sees-100-times-more-colors-average-person/

Remember"what color is this dress?"

https://www.piedmont.org/living-better/what-color-is-the-dress

Color measurement is very technical and has to deal with emissive, reflective and subtractive colors, then come up with a pigment, dye or paint that will be interpreted by the observer as a certain defined color.

The tint adjustment that used to be on tv's was there because men see green differently than women. That is why they could never agree on the proper tint of the picture.

Eventually it was encoded with the signal to a standard color in the NTSC signal, along with contrast, brightness, etc,so those manual adjustments were eliminated,or optional via menu.

Different broadcast technologies are used all over the world,SECAM,PAL,and others.for instance,in Russia, the horizontal, vertical, brightness, color, contrast, tint, volume, channel and power switch is controlled automatically remotely.

Even digital TV has many different standards. In the real world,it is not what you see,it is how you look at it,and what you are allowed to see.

I see nothing wrong with that.

Umma Gumma echo the obvious,

...There's no dark side of the moon really, it's all dark.

Skies.

We all see the world through a glass darkly. We do not see the world as insects do,or birds,or bacteria. We cannot see infrared,UV or cosmic rays.We have devices that can shift it into our visible range, but that is not the same, like an Xray shows the bones,we only see the bones of reality. We are still limited and cannot see true reality.Over 90 percent of the universe is missing,to our senses at least.

Ask a fish "How is the water"and he will reply"What water?"
