Oddities in Nature

09/30/2022 1:36 AM

A few, several years ago, I ran across an article that described a ground organism in the wild that when its environment became too harsh for survival they would come together and form or grow a stalk so they could catch the wind and travel to a better location.

Time has eroded many of the details of that article from my memory and I don't remember if it was a fungus or spore, but I do recall they had a name for it and had a drawing showing the stalk formed. I believe it was a PBS or NPR article but my searches have come up with nada.

Anyone know what that might have been?

I remember reading about this in the book "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson.

IIRC, slime molds propagate this way.

Slime molds- Amoeba was the key, I found it or the reference I was looking for.

What I was intrigued by; was the socializing of these amoeba. They understood the environmental dilemma and many sacrificed to build the stalk for just a fortunate few to have the chance to propagate and live on.

And they did that without "a brain"

I think scientists need to redefine the meaning of intelligence.Intelligence can occur without a centralized brain. The jellyfish is one example and there are many more organisms that act together as a single unit to accomplish a task.

Termites build structures that can regulate the internal temperature to within 1/10th of a degree. There are millions of termites in the colony and it runs like a well planned well lubricated machine, with each individual termite not knowing the overall plan.

There seems to be an external intelligence at work, directing the entire organisms.

Bacteria "talk" to one another and wait until they have sufficient numbers before attacking an organism. They share defensive strategies, and antibiotic resistance information.

Bacteria have also been found to reassemble antibiotics from wastewater to make their own defense against competitors.

The antibiotics had previously been broken down and destroyed by the waste treatment plant.

Army ants can move millions of ants overnight with no problems. The guard ants stand over the procession to keep goof offs in line.
(Yes,there are lazy ants that are simply goofing off,the 80/20 rule applies here.)

Scientists claim the guard ants are there to keep predators away, but I think otherwise.

Ants have been tagged and observed, and 80 percent are goofing off,not carrying their load, while the other 20% are doing the work.Sound familiar?

IMHO:The universe is totally alive and very intelligent !

What scientists claim that? Any citations?

Not that it matters, of course, since you know more than they do.

I will never argue with you.You are too experienced for me.

"Citations? We don't need any stinking citations"

You just need to 'believe the science'
