Auto car suspension leaf spring set

10/12/2022 5:05 AM

How much curve should be in a car leaf spring before fitting? Too much curve and the car will be too high off the ground. Too little curve and the car will hit bottom stops.

As far as a curve,… never gave it much thought.

I had a ‘70 Chevrolet Nova, where I had to replace the leaf spring… (twice), first time I was 16, with no money, my dad pointed me to a salvage yard. I measured hole to hole.

And called the salvage year they had one on the shelf… when I picked it up, I verified the measurement. The first time I change it, it took 6 hours. The second time, it took less then an hour.

after I considered myself an ‘expert’ as a 17 year old.. I did notice, when under a car, all the springs I saw, had cracks in them.

I memorable time, there was a party in a cornfield. When I got home I did a quick check of the car… you know… make sure there was no ‘evidence’…

next morning, which came pretty dam quick. As I was walking out to the barn, I look at the my car,… and was pretty proud… no mud or nothing… when chores were done… we went in for breakfast…

dad came in, sat down… and asked what all those corn stalks doing under my car…

I learned at an impressionable age. That you cross that line, you’re going to get caught…

but it did take more than one lesson. Slow learner maybe…

Re: Auto car suspension leaf spring set

I bought a junker truck at a county auction for $25.It was a 1959 F100 ford 1/2 ton.I towed it home, put in a good battery, and it fired right up.Smoked a bit,but after an oil and filter change.,it quit smoking.I replaced the king pins and bushings to make it drive able.Still had a lot of slop in the steering wheel, and the adjustment for free play was already used up.I got used to driving it,kind like steering a ship.I used it for hunting, fishing, trash hauling, basicaly anything I didn't want to use my good truck for.

One day I found the trail to my favorite fishing spot blocked by a parked car.I plowed through the woods around it,knocking down trees the size of my arm and larger. This truck had bumpers made like the front of a barge.Very thick. When I cam eback out,the trees I had run over were facing toward me,so in a devil-may-care mood,I went back through them and uprooted several of the trees. My windshield was covered in leaves and I could not see anything till I exited the woods, about 50 yards or so.

I looked under the truck, nothing stuck under it,No radiator damage,no bumper damage.however, the left outside mirror had been slapped down against the door, but was not broken.I pushed it back up into position and drove on home.

The next day my uncle said that he had some unharvested corn that I could have if I picked it ,so I drove into the field, knocking down dead stalks as I went.I loaded up with corn for deer feed, and noticed a smell of antifreeze. One solitary corn stalk had gone under the bumper, between the radiator and grill, and punctured the radiator. After all the trees I had knocked down, one cornstalk did more damage than the trees.

It was an easy fix,and that truck turned out to be nearly indestructible.

I tried to destroy it,but failed. However,I did break a right front leaf spring and replaced it with one from a junkyard.Strange,I had to use a left front spring from the junker because it had a broken right side leaf spring too.Might have had a bad batch of leafs that year.

The toughest piece of metal to ever come out of Detroit,in my opinion.I would like to have another one like it was when it was new.

Kinda like that ,but not lowered, and a short body, and more rust on factory green paint. No one parked beside it in a parking lot,I guess they thought the rust was contagious.

The trailer hitch was 1 inch thick x 2 inch wide flat bar steel welded to the frame and rear bumper.I actually pulled stumps with it one time.

That looks like what it could have been:a well groomed, well manicured poodle.

My hunk of rust looked like it had seen better days, had been in many dog fights, lost a lot,won a few,but it just kept on fighting the good fight.

The hood on it weighed more than most new cars do now.

I stood on it one day to work on lights in my garage, and it didn't even dent it.

Very heavy, but the old reliable 223 straight six just kept on ticking.

It had so many miles on it when I got it that the wind had rubbed off most of the factory paint..

The odometer didn't work anymore,it just gave up the ghost when the numbers became too large for it to handle.

I finally sold it,sadly, to a man that was going to restore it and made me an offer I could not refuse.

I sometimes wish I still had it.No worries about scratches, dings,or dents.

It was an old reliable example of 1950's "gorilla engineering:(ugly but strong),when factories over engineered everything and things lasted a lifetime.
