Species and phenomena not known to science would, indeed, convince the imagination that one is on <...another planet...>.

There is more knowledge available about the surface of the Moon than about the ocean floor, reputedly. The former is more readily observable.

We had a friend (sadly deceased) who's daughter is a Doctor of Marine Biology (?) at James Cook University, Queensland, and I remember her saying that "...we know way less than 1% of what there is to know about the reef, you want to talk about the deep stuff, even just off the continental shelf, we know way less than 1% of 1% of what there is to know, the real deep stuff just start with 0.000001% and keep adding zeros to suit how deep you get..."
We were drinking with another friend at the time, a k1w1 OIM for TransOcean, and the subject came up....
