Improve rail guns?

12/24/2022 5:28 AM

Would embedding a super magnet in the projectile of a rail gun increase the efficiency and range of the rail gun?NdFeB magnets are the most powerful magnets available to the consumer, but I am sure there are more powerful ones for possibly classified purposes.

It would seem to me,that at first glance that a repelling polarity magnet would add to

the repulsive force created, but I do not know enough about it to be sure.

"The railgun in its simplest form differs from a traditional electric motor[5] in that no use is made of additional field windings (or permanent magnets). This basic configuration is formed by a single loop of current and thus requires high currents (e.g., of order one million amperes) to produce sufficient accelerations (and muzzle velocities). A relatively common variant of this configuration is the augmented railgun in which the driving current is channeled through additional pairs of parallel conductors, arranged to increase ('augment') the magnetic field experienced by the moving armature.[6] These arrangements reduce the current required for a given acceleration. In electric motor terminology, augmented railguns are usually series-wound configurations. Some railguns also use strong neodymium magnets with the field perpendicular to the current flow to increase the force on the projectile."

Yes that is true....

Classified magnets? ...surely you jest...

"The electric field vectors of a traveling circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. This wave is right-circularly-polarized, since the direction of rotation of the vector is related by the right-hand rule to the direction the wave is moving; or left-circularly-polarized according to alternative convention."

No,I do not jest..and quit calling me Shirley.

You have never heard of them because they are so secret.

I am working on a project now so secret that I don't even know what it is or what I am doing.

They will neither affirm or deny it's existence.

As long as they can affirm your paycheck you should be fine. As long as the check doesn't have a sticker on it that says "Indication Only".

No paycheck, just a deposit to a secret account on a nearby unnamed galaxy with no extradition treaty for Earth.

I could not sign a check anyway, since they wont even tell me who I am.

Rail guns will never become a part of our weapons inventory. Our military industrial cartel would never allow cheap ammunition. It's as simple as that.

Oh I wouldn't worry about that....

..."When the guided rounds are developed, the Navy is projecting each round to cost about $25,000, though developing guided projectiles for guns has a history of doubling or tripling initial cost estimates."...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railgun#:~:text=When%20the%20guided%20rounds%20are,or%20tripling%20initial%20cost%20estimates.

Basically the railguns took so long to develop they are now obsolete, modern tech has passed them by....

Oh I agree, even at $100k a piece, the new artillery shells are a bargain, being able to use existing platforms.......with that speed, range and accuracy. One shot, target is destroyed. Without a battery of platforms, a battery of supply and service, and a shower of projectiles. And once fired, difficult to detect, with very little time to prepare, and nothing to stop it.

One wonders why we have not seen them in Ukraine. I'll bet they have asked for them constantly. It would make short work for any command, communication and/or supply structure. For a large radius.

Too much of an escalation?

Rail guns have significant issues with materials because maintaining extremely high currents over a moving contact point is VERY difficult. Erosion of the rails is a major issue with rail guns. The U.S. Navy has done a lot of research at the lab at Dahlgren but I tend to think that coil guns were more successful even though the control systems are significantly more complex. But like others have said, other weapon technologies may have obsoleted these weapons before they could have been matured.

You may be right.N Tesla spoke a particle beam with a range of hundreds of miles.

This may have already been developed, and we would never know.

Lots of off budget works going on.

The first interstellar spacecraft will never reach it's destination. It will be caught up with and passed by the next generation, and so on and so on until we develop FTL or entanglement of massive objects.
