"Inside the Pentagon’s Plot to Shield 1,700 U.S. Military Installations From Rising Sea Levels"

Is this is too little, too late?

Unlike the flooding of a playa, global sea rise won't happen very fast. Even though the "point of no return" is nigh, the Pentagon has plenty of time to decide which installations merit bulwarking or moving to higher ground.

"plenty of time to decide which installations merit bulwarking or moving to higher ground."

There's a third, more logical, choice. That's close the most obsolete, least used/efficient, most at risk cases now?

That third choice is what is the more prudent choice… but then again… look at New Orleans. Unfortunately, Decisions now-a-day are not based on prudence, but votes.

Once again Solareagle's presentation of misleading information calls into question anything he says. Who would've thought it would be about the micro-tidal range of Melbourne Beach.

Hey, have you ever seen a red herring?

Apparently sea level rise is something that happens in 70 year cycles when the Earth's core reverses direction...seems as though it has stopped just now and will reverse and begin spinning the opposite direction in time...does that smell fishy to you? Well it seems it effects the climate as well...hmmm

https://www.kxan.com/news/science/dont-panic-earths-core-has-stopped-spinning-may-change-direction-experts-say/

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/12/151211145054.htm

..."The mind-boggling results suggest that Earth’s center pauses and reverses direction on a periodic cycle lasting about 60 to 70 years, a discovery that might solve longstanding mysteries about climate and geological phenomena that occur on a similar timeframe, and that affect life on our planet. "...

As I understand it, the Earth's core is NOT reversing direction, except with reference to a point on the Earth's surface. It IS slowing down. It was previously spinning faster than the Earths surface, and has slowed to the point that it is now starting to spin more slowly than the Earth's surface.

To an observer on the surface of the Earth, it would seem to have changed direction, but on a grander frame of reference, it's only slowing down.

Yes dkwarner it seems you are correct... the core always spins in the same direction as the earth spinning on it's axis, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, and sometimes the same speed....

Earth’s inner core may have stopped turning and could go into reverse, study suggests.

However, the speed of this rotation, and whether it varies, is debated, said Hrvoje Tkalcic, a geophysicist at the Australian National University, who was not involved in the study,

For what it's worth, I went back to my hometown in Massachusetts where I jumped off the seawall into Hingham Harbor as a kid fifty years ago, and the high tide came up to the exact same place it did fifty years ago. And because we would scramble up those big granite blocks to jump in again, we knew them very well. We have 9-10 ft tides there. This whole issue brings to mind a well-known Shakespearean play as the public is being fed a steady diet of politics masquerading as science.

Worldwide tidal shift

3.8" or 9.65 cm is right at the top of the blue range...

"The M2 tidal constituent, peak amplitude indicated by color. White lines are cotidal lines spaced at phase intervals of 30° (a bit over 1 hr).[8] Amphidromic points are the dark blue areas where the lines come together.

Some of the smallest tidal ranges occur in the Mediterranean, Baltic, and Caribbean Seas. A point within a tidal system where the tidal range is almost zero is called an amphidromic point."

Notice the difference between the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the Panama canal...

Thank you for the chart and explanation(s).

Colon, Panama has 1-2 foot tide swing. While Panama City, has 14 foot range. I thought it was due to the earths rotation except Bay of Fundy destroys that idea

Of course, it might be difficult to detect a 2 to 3 mm /year rise in sea level from that vantage... especially since Brevard County has been actively working to restore and 'renourish' its beaches at least as far back as the 1990s. Litterally millions of cubic yards of sand have been added to the beaches. Probably not the best place to attempt a comparison over time.

Not making observations from the sand on the beach, but from the landmarks that have been there for, for well since I was a kid and even going back further from photographs, some maybe 100 years ago...They don't move the highways and buildings inland every few years.....the sand that is added and subtracted every few years by storms and subsequent restoration is only applied on the recreational area of the beach....

Ft Lauderdale beach in the 50's, used to hit it every weekend...

Now...

Looks like the water use to be lower/further from the road based on those pics. There also looks like there use to be a lot more beach, even before the additions of so much sand.

Re: We're Sinking

Is Earth supposed to be in an ice age right now?

Scientists call this ice age the Pleistocene Ice Age. It has been going on since about 2.5 million years ago (and some think that it's actually part of an even longer ice age that started as many as 40 million years ago). We are probably living in an ice age right now!

What triggered the last ice age?

In general, it is felt that ice ages are caused by a chain reaction of positive feedbacks triggered by periodic changes in the Earth's orbit around the Sun. These feedbacks, involving the spread of ice and the release of greenhouse gases, work in reverse to warm the Earth up again when the orbital cycle shifts back.

How long will humans last?

Humanity has a 95% probability of being extinct in 7,800,000 years, according to J. Richard Gott's formulation of the controversial Doomsday argument, which argues that we have probably already lived through half the duration of human history.

"We're sinking" is exactly right in many places around the globe where subsidence is a significant, if not dominant factor in "sea level rise" observations. Mississippi Delta is a classic example.

There’s a thing called post glacial rebound, which the earth is still experiencing since the last ice age. If one can separate earth post glacier rebound from anything else would help.

From your first link:

"Giant Wind Turbines Keep Mysteriously Falling Over. This Shouldn't Be Happening.

The taller the turbine, the more epic the tumble....

Multiple turbines that are taller than 750 feet are collapsing across the world, with the tallest—784 feet in stature—falling in Germany in September 2021. To put it in perspective, those turbines are taller than both the Space Needle in Seattle and the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. Even smaller turbines that recently took a tumble in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Wales, and Colorado were about the height of the Statue of Liberty."

How does this fit in with your political agenda for this thread?

I saw nothing political in the original thread, but then I've always avoided politics when possible, so perhaps I'm not politically observant.

What I saw was a conflict between long- and short-range objectives. Apparently, few people are able to ignore short-range problems in order to obtain long-range benefits.

According to SE all is well! There is no subsidence in wherever that picture was taken.

It's just in our collective heads, some here excepted, of most people that all the ice that is/has/will melt doesn't just evaporate. It will, eventually, cause more severe climate change.

Yes, and the land will sink. relative to the ocean.

So, have it your way. Either way, we're sinking.

Well I think you may have discounted the desalination for fresh water, and the splitting of water to hydrogen to ammonia, to energy and fertilizer chiefly, but other things as well...we're going to start using the sea water perhaps as fast as it is increasing, if it is at all...now whether some phenomena cause the rising and or falling of the Earth's surface is sure to happen from time to time...maybe we can stabilize that by pumping all that salty water in all the cavities created? In any case it's all speculation...

Any supporting data???

That's a lot of opinions/conjecture.

You said, "we're going to start using the sea water perhaps as fast as it is increasing, if it is at all.".

"Even with all of the water in Earth's oceans, we satisfy less than half a percent of human water needs with desalinated water", says Peter Gleick, president of the Pacific Institute.

Where is your supporting data???????

Re: We're Sinking

So we are currently perhaps providing less than 1/2 percent of our current population, both are in a vertical climb...

We are producing ~120 million cubic meters per day at present, so if it was 50% that would be ~ 16 billion cubic meters a day with population growth factored in....or ~6 trillion cubic meters per year...Now if we add hydrogen production, well who can say..."In 2021, primary energy consumption for World was 603.32 quadrillion btu. "

"Approximately 10 million metric tons of hydrogen is produced in the U.S. annually, equivalent to just over 1 quadrillion BTUs per year "

"Assuming the world is using over 70EJ of electrolytic hydrogen by 2050, the water consumption will be about 25 bcm. That is relatively small compared with the global figure of 2,800 bcm for agriculture (the largest consumer), 800 bcm for industrial uses, and 470 bcm for municipal uses. It would be equivalent to a developed country with 62 million inhabitants (400 m3/capita). Even in the most conservative case, where water desalination is used, the water cost (treatment, transport) would be less than 2% of the total hydrogen production cost and the energy consumption for water desalination would be only about 1% of the total energy needed for the hydrogen production."...

Calculated rate of sea level rise annually...

75.6 trillion gallons = 288 billion cubic meters

of water added to the ocean each year, raising sea levels by approximately 0.8 millimeters.

...As you can see we will surpass the water being added to the seas in probably 20 - 40 years, through desalination and energy production usage...

"we will surpass?'"

"we MAY surpass"

That's a trend, not a fact.

I doubt either of us will be around in another 20 years to see the result.

I'm glad you agree we can ignore this "rising sea's" crap....and either rising or falling land mass in relation to the sea level is purely location dependent, and not predictable...

DO NOT PUT WORDS IN MY MOUTH!!!!!!! "RISING SEAS CRAP" is YOUR DISTORTED words, not mine.

Luddites! Unite behind SE and deny that the land is sinking/oceans rising!

It's all just a trick and the "dark government" (you know, the one you all fear) is lying to us to make us think all is well. Imagine a lobster in rapidly warming water. Lying on SE"s beach in la-la land.

Green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, brown hydrogen and even yellow hydrogen, turquoise hydrogen and pink hydrogen. They're essentially colour codes, or nicknames, used within the energy industry to differentiate between the types of hydrogen.

Take your pick.

If started today, what's the cost to build and time required to bring this on-line? 5 years?

Question is, how long will all this take?

Desalinization produces 1.6 gallons of salty sludge for every gallon of drinkable water produced.

Due to the mega drought on the Colorado watershed 2we may not have much time.

..." They're essentially colour codes, or nicknames, used within the energy industry to differentiate between the types of hydrogen."...

No these are all the same hydrogen, the color codes id the type of energy used to produce the hydrogen...The 'salty sludge' you speak of, is the removal of the salt in one gallon and when added to another gallon of seawater doubles the salt content of that gallon....if the glaciers are melting that is adding fresh water to the sea's, so the large scale desalination is balancing the total salt....all is well

If you want water you need to dig a hole....it's down there ↓↓ 'swhere you'll get it...

Dig down to the rising sea level....

Yes, what is with the failures of wind turbines as of late. It used to be an oddity to see the failures, and now it more common… is it because of the number of wind turbines.

And btw,.. Only liberals can get political. Just go back 2-6 years…

I wonder if it is because of recency (or whatever is the more correct term). Just like after a major earthquake, suddenly numerous smaller earthquakes are popping up upon the news, or after a major airoplane crash, suddenly a little 2-seater crashing in Alaska makes the news?

More seriously, wind turbines are highly visible and so often would their failures be more visible and noticeable. A power station, on the other hand, can have numerous rather large failures that would not be visible when just passing by (ask us, we know : conveyor system collapse, chute failure, boiler failure, steam generators exploding, etc.). Not arguing either way, just saying that, short of a major explosion, lay people would barely know which units of a coal-fired power station is faulty, compared to the more visible failures of a wind turbine (blade failure, gearbox fire, toppling over)

"Inside the Pentagon’s Plot to Shield 1,700 U.S. Military Installations From Rising Sea Levels"

Gross exaggeration. It's just like the news media to exaggerate and lie to help the current administration to get more tax dollars out of everybody.

"United States has approximately 450 to 500 military bases." and that's way too many

military-life/how-many-military-bases-are-in-the-us/
