Cast iron bathtubs…

03/23/2023 6:21 PM

Speaking of cast iron bath tubs… I pulled this out of the link…

pits interesting,… long ago, we used cast iron bath tubs as watering troughs for our horses… making a full circle… it was indestructible… as a lot of you already knew…

“The company was started by John Michael Kohler in 1873 when he decided to take a horse trough and apply an enameled powder coat to his invention. He then added four legs to create the first enameled cast iron bath. Since then, Kohler cast iron baths have been designed to last a lifetime.”

here’s a little history of it, by the Kohler company…

i hope I didn’t start something here…

But how does one remove a cast iron bathtub?

Thinking out loud and out of the box… Instead of removing it…. Maybe repurpose it…

But unless you want the horse in the bathroom, you still need to remove it

Battery powered lift trucks are available, such as the one that vending companies use to move vending and drink machines up and down stairs.

Enlarging the bathroom door is a small task if remodeling anyway.

No need to destroy a great tub and work of art.

Even a cast iron bathtub is no match for cows unless it is half buried.

They will push it all over the pasture.

Bovines are incredibly strong and agile but you would not know it by looking at them.

I have seen full grown bulls leap over the side of a 6 foot high trailer side.

I'm sure Mr. Kohler would approve...

I would think that in both uses, a major advantage would be that the cast iron would not rust with the enamel coating.

Cattle, and horses can be pretty rough with the standard water trough…

we had 3 of them bathtubs in the pens…and they were indestructible…

we didn’t use them as water troughs for the cattle… it wasn’t large enough when the herd came to drink… but we did put a salt block in them and the cows used them as a salt lick ‘holder’.

For what it's worth: I had a cast iron tub in my last house; a paid a guy a lot of money to refurbish it, and, it lasted a few months. So, I did it again myself using car paint: worked great, lasted 'til we moved out. Makes sense because you can imagine that car paint has to be pretty tough.

What failed the first time… enamel ‘peeled’ off? Or what.

I believe that originally it’s baked on.

A little more about the town of Kohler. As it was told to me… It was a company town, where the company controlled everything. I don’t believe it was bad, because Kohler had high standards. I’m looking into it more…

Does look like fun...but we had rules and stuff...limited to 180cc, tub had to weigh at least xx amount, 5 point harness, fire bottle on board, blah, blah, blah...but even with that small engine those suckers were quick (and fast).

I bet a cast iron tub would do well in a demolition derby

Another use for a cast iron tub is:

Bury all of it except the top lip, in the ground in a bed of gravel.

Surround it with gravel, and fill it with Real charcoal;Preferably Mesquite, hickory, apple or pecan charcoal). Do Not use any type of charcoal starter fluid, start it the old fashioned way by building the starter fire from kindling.Use the wood of choice to build the initial fire.

When the ashes die down to white, place a large whole pig in the tub and cover the tub with tin and seal cover of the tin with soil.

Wrap the pig in fencing,or put it on a home made rebar grating to allow easy removal.

Throw in a couple dozen green bananas wrapped in foil on top of the pig.

The tub holds the heat steady as the pig cooks.

Uncover it in 8 hours and have the closest thing to a Luau cooked pig that can be had this side of Hawaii.

Pulled Pork BBQ! AH! Love it.

You should throw in some leafy allspice tree branches between the ashes and the pig: do you know the origin of the word buccaneer?

Sorry,no allspice around here,Mesquite will have to do.

Haven't tried that flavor yet,and I hate to modify an old traditional method and risk a whole day and pig in the experiment.

I have an old rebar grate with 3 inch long legs that keeps the pig out of direct contact with the ashes. It has been around since before I was a twinkle in my mom's eye.

The pig is wrapped in one layer of 5"x6" fence wire, which holds everything together and makes removing it all in one piece easy.

The drain plug has been removed from the tub to allow the grease to escape into the gravel below.

This is real Pit Cooked BBQ.
