Extending Device Battery Charge

04/23/2023 8:41 AM

An often requested subject here at CR4 has been “how to extend the battery life for my device”.

I cannot recall that a suggestion has ever been offered that seemed useful. Have there been any that I missed?

The reason for this is that I have stumbled across a very effective method to do just that: an external, portable, universal, reliable power source for digital camera, phone, laptop... ummm... rechargeable flashlight or camping lantern... Depending on you view of what ‘inexpensive’ really means, this is also pretty inexpensive.

Tool batteries. Adapters are available for these ubiquitous power storage appliances that are equipped with USBA and/or USBC power ports. Also available with connection points to tap (if I understand the manufacturers propaganda sheets) 12VDC.

My phone is old. Charge it up, I will get about 10 hours of standby, 3, maybe 4 hours of steady internet use. I connected a 4Ah compact DeWALT battery (about 0.3 henway, or about 20 ounces) to the phone, used the device as I usually do, stopped the experiment at eight days, extremely satisfied with this result.

I have seen these adapters for many of the big name tool guys: DeWALT, Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch -

Has this solution been tried by anyone else? Good or bad experience?

I am confused about what you are proposing. Aren't you doing the same thing as one of these power banks but using a power tool battery instead?

The solar cells of this particular bank seem to me to be an interesting addition. Solar irradiance varies widely by location and weather. So, I understand not mentioning solar charging times but "topping off" with just solar power seems like a good idea to me.

I do not own this or any other power bank.

Yes.

And, maybe I’m out of the current loop (that there is an exceptional pun intended, or a Magnum P.I.) on state of the art power banks. The four, five, maybe six powerbanks in residence at chez Doorman (purchased by Mrs Doorman to resolve her same issue) all offer (in my opinion) woeful performance, measured in single digit hours of extra device life, not the 200 odd hours cited.

I like the solar option.

This thread isn’t necessarily intended to lobby in favor of this tool battery scheme. This can be kind of expensive. I already have batteries and chargers, so this only cost me $7.50 USD for the adapter.

I understand that the image you included was simply a paradigm. The customer reviews for the Solar Power Bank 36800mAh Portable Solar Charger 5V3.1A, QC 3.0 Dual 2 USB say the power bank charged a phone between one and four times, then pooped out. So, this particular power bank - except for the solar charge thing - is about like the ones that Mrs Doorman has purchased, maybe a little better. Not a real standout performer, but it’s also only $20 bucks USD.

I’ll look around on the ‘net and see if I can find a better contender.

Another thing that occurs to me about all those power banks that I have stored in drawers is the charge time. IIRC, it takes four or five hours to charge one of those things up. A DeWALT DCB240 battery runs my old and inefficient phone for a week @ 24 hrs/day, and charges back to 100% in about 50 minutes.

I have several of those portable power packs, they just don't work well, too slow....I have a wireless charger by my desk and use the charger in the car when on the road...so never found a use for them...For extended use I also have a 12v battery pack for jumpstarting the car, and several battery backup UPS with UBS, so yeah, I'm covered...I might consider something like this...

For off grid day tripping...possibly adding the solar panel add-on option...

Many of the threads pleading for helpful advice on this subject seemed to be from younger people, and many of those posters seemed to be ESL. I cannot recall anyone ever specifying a root reason for a need of extended battery life, but unpredictable mains would certainly be a valid reason.

USB power ports seem to be on everything anymore. At least one tool and battery manufacturer puts one right in the battery! I’m sort of surprised toy model train transformers don’t have a USB port or two... yet. The next generation of train transformers from all major players will almost certainly have them.

On a side note, it was reported in the UK that some coal fired power stations had to be brought back into use this month. This was because of a lack of wind for the turbines & the high temperatures reducing the efficiency of solar power. I had not realised that solar panels become less efficient as they get hotter.

Is that a Radio Shack logo on his shoulder? I thought they were defunct.

Well, in the Radio Shack logo that I remember the letter ‘R’ is not centered in the circle.

But the hip of the shorts... looks like Radio Shack might be there.

Backtrack the image, go through the slideshow, and we have

I am waiting for the power supply that the hand-held Phasers on Star Trek used.

My flip phone will stay on mostly stand-by for several days, so I don't need the extended power supply. I don't use it much for yakking, and never the internet. The old laptop battery will provide several hours, that is all I need.
