How to share a video

05/31/2023 1:08 PM

I have a PBS program on my DVR. It is not available to stream from other PBS stations or any internet source I can find. How can I share it with friends who don't get my PBS station? Maybe play it, convert the HDMI output of the DVR to some format I can record on my PC, then send the file? Or is there an easier way?

I believe that might be a violation of your agreement with the host....What is the title of the video, maybe I can find it online....

Maybe you could re-create the content here?

Several years ago our local high school team played in the state championship. I recorded the televised game on my Directv DVR, and wanted to save a copy. After much investigation and help from Directv tech support, the only way I could figure out was to play it back and re-record it using a separate recorder/DVD burner.

That is a way to save it, but still probably not legal to share it.

Too bad, it is a very good documentary. And some of the ships were refloated years later and sold for scrap.

It could be that the owner of the <...PBS program...> is able to enforce Copyright © by limiting its availability. As well as a technical hurdle there may well be a legal hurdle to overcome.

Progress from here is only for the wary, and may be unwise.

Some modern DVR's will not copy protected material.

This is a copy guard put into firmware of the DVR.

I have heard of people changing the chip, but that may be just rumors.

There are also some online protections that prevent photos from being copied by "Copy-Paste" or "Print Screen" functions.

As a patent holder I believe in getting paid for my ideas.

Why not send a link to the program instead?

That way everyone pays and everyone is happy!

If the DVR feeds HDMI to my TV, can it be copy protected? I thought of splitting the HDMI signal, converting it to USB and sending that to my PC. I did it some years ago with another DVR and posted the result on YouTube.

I don't think a link would work, since the program is behind a paywall, but I'll try it.

I tried a link, but access is restricted to "TPT Passport" members, those who donate to the local PBS station. Gotta have a password. Here's the link:
