What are the ingredients in this heat pad?

06/01/2023 8:01 AM

This is an image of a cold-war era heating pad.It was activated by adding water,and could last for 8 hours or more and reused many times.I don't know the ingredients,but maybe something like caustic soda,aluminum powder, and/or iron powder and sand.It was relatively heavy,about 3 pounds or so.It was great in the bottom of a sleeping bag in a cold environment.,and would last up to 8 hours.I don't think there is a commercial equivalent,but if anyone knows of one,please let me know.I am aware of the modern heat /cooling pads.

I have found these on surplus sites,but too expensive and don't know how many times they have been used,and I am sure they have deteriorated somewhat over the years.

I would like to make my own,but I am not sure of the ingredients.

Thanks in advance for all and any help on this matter.

<...cold-war era heating pad...>

According to this they were invented in Canada in 1911.

Ferrous iron powder and your choice of an oxidizing agent...heat from rust...The original one you had to keep adding the iron powder to, and it would just keep getting heavier and the bag material would wear out.......then they came up with an improved version...same principal with more rapid oxidizer...

In a heating pack comprising an outer bag and a removable inner bag for containing a particulate ferrous metal for producing an exothermic oxidation reaction in the presence of water, the improvement which comprises 6-8 parts by weight of an oxidizing mixture for use in combination with 100 parts by weight of said ferrous metal, said oxidizing mixture consisting essentially of:

25-35% by weight of cupric carbonate;

30-40% by weight of sodium chloride;

Don't really need these anymore with improved sleeping bags...

Have you tried the gel type heating pads? I carry these for outdoor activities in the winter. They give off a good amount of heat for quite a long period & can be recharged by leaving in boiling water.

Calcium Carbide would be sufficient to keep the feet warm AND weld up the bed.

I thought about Thermite,but I figured that might be a little overkill,with emphasis on Kill.
