This is an image of a cold-war era heating pad.It was activated by adding water, and could last for 8 hours or more and reused many times.I don't know the ingredients, but maybe something like caustic soda, aluminum powder, and/or iron powder and sand.It was relatively heavy, about 3 pounds or so.It was great in the bottom of a sleeping bag in a cold environment.,and would last up to 8 hours.I don't think there is a commercial equivalent, but if anyone knows of one, please let me know.I am aware of the modern heat /cooling pads.
I have found these on surplus sites, but too expensive and don't know how many times they have been used, and I am sure they have deteriorated somewhat over the years.
I would like to make my own,but I am not sure of the ingredients.
Thanks in advance for all and any help on this matter.
