REGISTRATION STILL CLOSED TO NEW MEMBERS?

08/30/2023 4:29 PM

Hey guys... I haven't been in for a year or so. What's going on with registering new members? I just recommended the site to a few people, and now just realized new members aren't being accepted. Will they not be able to ask questions? Are there some changes coming, or something? I like things the way they are for the past couple decades.

I think if you work directly with one of the moderators, they can probably get your friends hooked up. The problem with the automated web sign-up was the spammers signing up for many accounts and you could never get ahead of the spammers.

Ah... God damn spammers. This is exactly why we can't have nice things.

Man, we been here 16 years. I don't even know how many of the old moderators are still alive. You prit'near lost me about a year and a half ago.

Have I missed any of the old timers passing away?

Many old timers have slipped into the shadows, their circumstances unknown. I have not heard of any passings.

We occasionally hear from Del the Cat. Capt Moosie hasn't been active in many years. Lyn pops in from time-to-time. I think Kris chimed in a few months ago. Doorman has been fairly regular. English Rose hasn't posted since 2017. It's been about a year since I'd seen Crabtree, Ronseto, Andy Germany or Autobroker on. Hooker still checks in somewhat regularly.

SolarEagle, Deefburger, Codemaster, BruceFlorida, StandardsGuy, Gavilan, Truth is not a compromise, PWSlack, JRaef, Nigh, Dkwarner, HiTekRedNek, Rixter, Redfred, Randall, Stef, HUSH, GringoGreg, Shyam, Jorrie, Agua_doc, PAPADOC, Sue, Jack of all trades, Not so Smart, Yuval, Chrisg288, Jmeuller, North of 60, JWthetech, Garth, Micahd02, Just an Engineer, JIMRAT, and Tornado still post regularly.

It's been seven years since we last heard from Anonymous Hero. Kramarat, JohnDG, Aurizon, ky, Milo, jdretired, Tom_Consulting, Hendrik, netmaker, IdeaSmith, Bricktop, and Usbport posted last in 2020. JE in Chicago, Old Salt, JBTardis, Kilowatt0, Rashavarek, K_Fry, SimpleMind, and JPool lurk around and post here and there. I think Tcmtech opted to stay away after some heated exchanges. Haven't heard from SavvyExacta, James Stewart, Janissaries, Ozzb, Fredski, Sparkstation, Shadetree, Ace Boeringa or Vermin in a long time.

Wow, all these names from the past... the good old days when CR4 was still the Wild West. I had a point there for a while, when I absented myself due to too many heated exchanges. But came back after which ever jack ass it was that kept giving me a hard time had finally disappeared. It was pretty clique-y there for a while.

I generally pop in most when I have challenging design contracts. But for a while now I've been more management, operations, or working as a Manufacturing engineer. Not all that many challenges with those types of jobs.

Yesterday, though, I got a short contract to design wildlife data monitoring devices, which is really cool. Working through a grant from Texas A&M Dept. of Veterinary Pathology. Should be really fun! Particularly since my alternate career is in wildlife biology. I don't get opportunities to combine the two fields very often.

That's a good suggestion. I'll mention it to our electronics guy. I'm the mechanical design consultant for the project.

The first prototype we are building since I joined is for underwater use in the arctic. Working on the enclosure right now. The most recent completed project was a data transmitting collar specifically for Tree Kangaroos in Papua New Guinea.

So, Esp32 isn't fast enough to process images or run AI classifiers. We also have LoRaWAN radio module and a programmable LiDAR processor.

True, but they have low power standby and can connect to bluetooth or wifi and send reports. If you have wifi nodes scattered around or placed in strategic areas It can alert you and send up basic data while in range of the node.

I used a 24db microwave dish with a log periodic yagi feed on it and I could point it at a wifi 2mi away and see it's IP address. Something to think about.

Ah, yes... English Rose.

You always made me think of my best friend in high school, PW. His name was Gordon Slack. He was the biggest pot smoker and Black Sabbath fan of us all. He ended up being a lead chemist at DuPont.

He is. Might not be as visible as in the past but he's here. Might be an issue with quantum entanglement.

I still pop in from time to time. The content on here started to stagnate a little so it's not a regular thing anymore.

16 years is awhile.
I joined in 2007 after lurking for a while. I've been retired the second time for 5 years. I still read the daily post every time I clear my email. That lately has been about once a week. I seldom reply because there is almost always a good answer before I get to it or Its not something I know about. The number of posts has also gone way down from several years ago. I am too active now to spend much time on the computer.

Hi I beat you by a year, good to know you are still around.

I find my time is consumed more and more as I get older so many things to do and the paper work when you are retired seems to multiply .I still keep an eye on CR4 but as you say there are still a lot who are ahead of oneself submitted answers already. Also with me have to many emails to wade through.

G'day Garth. My favorite Aussineer old timer.

I pretty much have always come here for answers to my questions, mostly. Not so much to give answers. Being a contractor, every company I work for is so different, I have to learn a new industry, everywhere I go. I've worked for 9 different companies since I found this group. Moved to several different states. I finally settled in North Carolina when my body got too many pains to pick up and move any more. But there's always someone here who can give good suggestions when I get stuck on a design point I haven't encountered before.

I used to browse the new questions and discussions, but I too no longer have time for that.

But it's a damn good resource. I've recommended it to many, all over the country.

I could retire in two years, but I'll probably end up going another ten. I go from one financial crisis to another. But, it's a living... sometimes. My time online is mostly about Wildlife Biology now, my alternate career. I answer people's questions about wildlife behavior and research, on another forum called Quora. Make a few bucks here and there with wildlife articles that I write for magazines. If you're interested in checking out Quora... https://www.quora.com/profile/Stefan-Pociask

You might even find some engineering questions there to answer for people. The site is about all subjects. Well run. Anyone that gets nasty or rude is immediately kicked off the site.

joined 2006 - miss many of the old timers. Haven't been active for a while. Have to say that I have found it quite boring recently, more due to the questions asked than the responses.

Thanks for the info. I searched and found him at https://www.youtube.com/@delcat8168/videos. I was curious (that is rumored to have killed the cat) a few months ago and went looking for him. His old web pages are gone like last weeks kitty litter. There is someone with the same name, but sea kayaking as a hobby, that sucks in all the Google hits. Its good to know he is still purring and active at something.

I wish someone from down under (not Australia, the other place) with ham radio or university contacts would track down SparkStation. It would be good to know, even if the news is not good.

This complaint is fair and valid.

Without saying much, know there is active work on a new CR4 experience. I can't share more than that right now, but I look forward to doing so when we're ready.

It is true we can make exceptions to the 'closed forum' operation. Those can be addressed individually via emailing cr4admin@globalspec.com. .

We (some of us on the forum) discussed this in the past.

It's not a big problem just irritating: after you click on a link to a post you need to scroll up a bit to see it.

I signed up 16 years ago and while I haven't visited regularly (as in this is my first visit in 3 years) I'm feeling a bit nostalgic reading all the old names.
