I purchased a jump starter power pack a few years ago,and have used it once, and it worked great. However,I recently discovered that it is totally useless on a totally dead battery. It requires a certain amount of voltage from the battery to engage the start or boost logic.
It is absolutely useless if your vehicle has been sitting in an airport parking lot for a couple of weeks, and your battery has drained down. You still will need jumper cables to start.
Just be aware of the limitations of the booster/jumper devices.
Likewise the new"Smart" battery chargers are useless on a dead battery.
I have an old brute force battery charger, which is simply a transformer 2 diodes, and a circuit breaker.
It is also protected by the common sense of the user.
It has never failed me even when the smart chargers do not work.
A 2 Amp trickle charge has brought many "dead" batteries back to life, and has desulphated some by leaving the trickle charge on for a few weeks.
Many of these old chargers are booted to the curb because the selenium rectifier has failed, but this is easily replaced by a regular diode of sufficient current rating.
Comments always welcome.
