Old Habits

02/28/2024 9:30 AM

Old habits can sometime backfire and bite you in the butt.

Example: I had a clogged kitchen drain, so I had to remove the P trap under the sink. I did not want to get any water under the cabinet, so I put a pot under the trap and very carefully removed it. All of the water drained into the bucket, and not a single drop under the sink. I was very proud of this accomplishment. Out of habit, I dumped the pot into the sink...before I had replaced the trap!

You can imagine the result. (Pride cometh before a fall).

Anyone else done something stupid because of habit?

That's hiliarious, sounds like something I would do. You should get a job writing scripts for comedy sitcoms.

You ain't seen nothin'...try opening a sewer line from a large public building to service the sewage pump, where you are 20' down in a sump hole....sure you posted the "DON'T FLUSH" signs everywhere, and sent out notices..but compliance is never 100%...If you don't work fast enough you'll be in deep sheit...

Not an old habit but a missed step.

ENGINE OIL CHANGE

  1. On hand: Proper volume and grade of new oil, a new oil filter, a drain pan, tools, and paper towels.
  2. Raise vehicle and secure.
  3. With engine off, remove drain plug and drain oil into pan; inspect oil for evidence of contaminants, metal bits, etc. and address any issues accordingly.
  4. Remove old oil filter and clean filter's sealing surface on the engine; drain oil from filter into drain pan.
  5. Fill new filter with fresh oil, lube o-ring, and install new oil filter; hand tighten, then tighten to specified torque.
  6. Dispense the specified, measured amount of fresh oil into engine.
    1. !!!REPLACE DRAIN PLUG!!!
    2. Using another vehicle not blocked by subject vehicle, drive to automotive supply store to purchase additional oil and oil absorbent.
      1. Guessing the spilled amount, add newly purchased oil to achieve an approximation of the specified amount.
      2. Clean oil from drain pan surfaces.
      3. Start engine and confirm there are no leaks.
      4. Lower vehicle and with engine off, oil at operating temperature, and using dipstick, verify proper engine oil level; top up to dipstick full level if necessary, but if overfilled:
        1. Raise vehicle and secure.
        2. Partially remove drain plug and drain an amount of hot oil, guessed to be the overfill volume or slightly more, into drain pan.
        3. Re-secure the drain plug with hot oil draining from the engine oil pan.
        4. Clean oil from drain pan surfaces.
        5. Start engine and confirm there are no leaks.
        6. Lower vehicle and with engine off, oil at operating temperature, and using dipstick, verify proper engine oil level; top up to dipstick full level if necessary, but if over filled, repeat steps 1), 2), 3), 4), 5), and 6) until a proper oil level has been achieved, repeating these overfilled steps if necessary, including another drive to purchase more oil, more oil absorbent, more paper towels, etc.
  1. Dispense used oil into containers for recycling.
  2. CLEAN UP.

lol…

mines not as good, but it is somewhat entertaining…

I received a text asking how to unclog a drain…

Not recognizing the number, I asked who is this…

the response was ‘I’m your sister’… in caps…

It was odd, because my sister would fix it, and but that’s how she’d answer…

so…

1.) I told her to buy a some draino

2.) if that didn’t work, go to a hardware store and buy a cheap plastic snake for drains.

3.) if that didn’t work, take apart the trap and clean it out…

4.) if that didn’t work, call the plumber…

the response was thanks and was grateful…

About a month later, I got a text from her, I recognized it and she asked if I was willing to halvis for a new mailbox for our mother…

I remembered her so responded something to the effect of… that’ll be a nice gesture… but I don’t think our mother would get much mail…

she was confused,… and replied with ‘???’

I responded that, ‘our mother passed on over 20 years ago… I think you have the wrong number.’

she was embarrass…than I added if she got her sink unclogged last month.

she put it together and it was funny for both of us.

Not so much out of habit. More of stupidity.

I was building a temporary shower in our kitchen for my Mother-in-Law who was going to stay with us for a while awhile and she could not do stairs anymore (e.g. shower and baths are on second floor). I needed to tap our water lines to our kitchen sink to connect temporary water controls. I shut of the hot water at the hot water heater and shut off the cold water at the water softener. I cut the hot water line and installed a tee...no problem. I cut the cold water line and instantly had an old faithful geyser underneath our sink. I ran downstairs to shut off the water at the meter. But I am no Flash. The cold water to the kitchen feeds straight from the meter to the kitchen sink without going through the softener. That was a lot of water to mop up.

Habits can be a very good thing. When we teach people to fly, we teach them habits. When the pressure is on, it's not unusual for people to forget things, so having ingrained habits is extremely important. They are taught to use the checklist to double check what they've done after handling the stressful situation.

Sometimes when changing the cartridge water filter, I forget to put the new cartridge filter in the sump because I bring the sump upstairs for cleaning. Wait a minute, something is missing.

It hasn't happened to me in a while, but sometimes when heading out to do some chores knowing I have to turn left at the town common, I will turn right by habit because the groceries, doctor, dentist, and so on are to the right. Down the road, what are you doing? It's the wrong way.

Yes, old habits can catch anyone at anytime. I think we all have many things on our minds.

I once had a hot rod souped up 454 Chevy that had a memory..every time we passed gas station,it wanted to turn in.

Someone asked me how fast would it go,and I said I don't know..before I reach top end it runs out of gas.
