I have a remedy that seems to work to kill a colony of fire ants.
A fire ant mound can be smelled from far away.It is the formic acid creating the smell. So,I reasoned that an antacid, like baking soda would generate enough co2 to kill the colony.I mixed baking soda with water to a total saturation level(where the water will not dissolve anymore ,and the baking soda drops to the bottom). I poured this into the mound and covered it with plastic. An hour later,I poured 8 ounces of 5% vinegar ,mixed with 1 gallon of water into the mound and covered it again.
Uncovered it the next day,and no a sign of fire ants.
A week later,still no ants.
Best done at night or pre-dawn when all of the foragers are in the nest.
I am sure there are optimum mixtures for generating co2, and mine is probably stronger than it needs to be but it works for me.My theory is that co2 will penetrate all of the nooks and crannies in sufficient quantity to kill all of the colony.
Chemists can certainly can optimize this formula.
I cannot recommend this method to anyone, this is only my opinion, and seems to work for me.
